Product Manager, Trust & Safety

Sunday Robotics•Redwood City, CA
•$180,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Sunday is seeking its first product manager dedicated to trust and safety as it develops Memo, a personal robot designed for use in homes. The role owns Memo’s safety and privacy requirements end to end, including what is tested, what is promised to users, and what should not be shipped. The product manager will collaborate across robot software, hardware, controls, machine learning, app, design, and operations to make safety a system-wide property. The role will establish a safety framework for a new product category where established home-robot safety standards do not yet exist. It will define release requirements, coordinate subsystem testing and mitigations, shape the robot’s behavior around children, pets, and unexpected situations, and set privacy policies for in-home recording and teleoperation. The product manager will also lead incident reviews and use real-world observations to improve product requirements.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years in product, safety, or quality roles involving physical consumer products that people use and live with.
  • Experience shipping hardware into homes in a context where standards were limited and needed to be established.
  • Experience working with engineers on test plans, failure analysis, or release gating.
  • Ability to learn technical systems quickly, including navigation stacks, controllers, and firmware release processes, well enough to ask informed questions and identify gaps.
  • Strong attention to detail, including reviewing test reports and identifying overlooked edge cases.
  • Strong judgment and a deep sense of responsibility, including comfort making safety-related decisions and delaying release when appropriate.
  • Familiarity with data privacy principles for connected consumer devices, such as cameras and in-home sensors.
  • Comfort working through ambiguity at an early-stage company and writing initial standards where none exist.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in automotive, aerospace, or medical devices.
  • Experience with consumer product safety standards such as ASTM, UL, or CPSC.
  • Experience with in-home cameras or robots.
  • Experience with incident or recall processes.

Responsibilities

  • Own the safety and trust roadmap for Memo and define and enforce release-specific criteria for being safe to ship.
  • Build a system-level safety case by mapping failure modes across navigation, hardware, controls, task design, firmware, and user communications, and ensuring each has an owner, test, and mitigation.
  • Work with engineering to define and track safety-test coverage for every subsystem and ensure firmware and software releases meet safety requirements before over-the-air updates.
  • Own product data privacy requirements, including what Memo records, who can access recordings (including teleoperators), retention periods, and how users understand and control data practices.
  • Design Memo’s behavior and communications around children, pets, and unexpected situations, including stop conditions, warnings, recovery, and app messaging.
  • Create a safety framework for a home robot by drawing on relevant adjacent industries without importing unsuitable processes.
  • Lead incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and follow-up changes when something goes wrong in a home or office.
  • Partner with product operations to turn real-home observations into safety requirements.
  • Define and track safety metrics, including incidents per robot-hour, near misses, subsystem test coverage, and time to mitigation.
