About The Position

Skyward is hiring a Product Designer to own UX and UI for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ enterprise AI platform and AI products. The designer will turn requirements and research into intuitive, polished, high-fidelity, USWDS-aligned designs in Figma, moving work from concept through implementation-ready handoff. The role combines product design craft with evidence-informed research, accessibility, and close collaboration with engineers, the AI team, and CMS stakeholders in a badgeless, one-team environment. The position includes creating and maintaining reusable design-system components and patterns, rapidly prototyping solutions, mapping user journeys, and integrating findings from lightweight research into the design. Designs must incorporate Section 508 and WCAG accessibility considerations from the outset. Skyward offers flexible working hours and remote opportunities. Employment is contingent on acceptable background-investigation results, and applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience in UX/product design, including hands-on research exposure, or in a closely related field.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong visual and interaction design, including real products taken from concept to polished, shipped UI.
  • Deep proficiency in Figma, including high-fidelity design, prototyping, and building or maintaining design systems and component libraries.
  • Solid understanding of information architecture, interaction patterns, and usability principles.
  • Ability to conduct lightweight research to validate design work.
  • Familiarity with USWDS and federal customer-experience mandates.
  • Accessibility awareness and ability to incorporate Section 508 and WCAG into design work.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance; employment is contingent on acceptable background-investigation results.

Nice To Haves

  • Front-end familiarity with HTML/CSS or experience designing closely with React teams.
  • Experience designing data-heavy or AI-driven products, such as dashboards, search, chat, or knowledge tools.
  • Previous experience supporting CMS or another federal agency.
  • Strong research skills and ability to lead discovery as confidently as design.

Responsibilities

  • Own UX and UI design for CMS’s enterprise AI platform and AI products, from concept through polished, high-fidelity designs in Figma.
  • Create sketches, wireframes, and interactive prototypes, iterating quickly to make solutions tangible for stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain reusable design-system components, patterns, and standards.
  • Plan and conduct lightweight research, including usability sessions, interviews, and feedback loops, and apply findings to designs.
  • Build user flows, journey maps, and service blueprints to show how users move through AI services and where friction occurs.
  • Design for Section 508 and WCAG accessibility requirements from the start.
  • Collaborate with engineers, the AI team, and CMS stakeholders, and hand off designs that are ready for development.
