Product Design Engineer II
About The Position
Trane Technologies is seeking an experienced Product Design Engineer II to join our Trane Commercial Systems organization as a key member of the product development team. This role works closely with other Engineering teams, such as the Test Lab, Manufacturing, and Product Management, to create competitive designs for Trane Commercial Water-to-Water HVAC equipment, encompassing both heating and cooling functionalities. The selected individual must have the technical expertise to support and lead product design projects, product validation testing, drive to root cause for quality & reliability issues, interpret technical agency standards, and conduct projects in accordance with standard engineering and stage-gate product development process practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and at least 3-5 years of engineering or product design experience is required.
- Able to function as a core team member on cross-functional product engineering teams and deliver on select design elements for projects.
- Detailed understanding of HVAC system functions including refrigeration, heat transfer, airflow, and ventilation.
- Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to understand and organize information necessary to make engineering decisions quickly and efficiently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills – ability to communicate up, down, and across the organization.
- Ability to deliver and lead technical designs to meet project and product requirements.
- Ability to work as an effective member of a team.
Nice To Haves
- Master’s Degree in Engineering is a plus.
- Background in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is preferred.
- Experience with UL, CRN, Seismic (IBC/OSHPD), and ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is preferred.
- Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) knowledge is preferred.
- Experience with FEA, structural analysis, and related engineering evaluation methods is preferred.
- Good understanding of the application of computer simulation tools and theory to HVAC system design is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Develop HVAC refrigeration systems to meet performance, regulatory, quality, and cost requirements.
- Review and understand the technical feasibility of product and internal requirements. Design and select robust and cost-effective components and develop engineering specifications.
- Understand and apply applicable regulatory codes and standards, such as UL, CRN, seismic, and ASME requirements.
- Create and maintain the engineering documentation package, including technical reports, lab test results, drawings, and specifications, to ensure it reflects the design intent and that all required documents are completed on time to the satisfaction of internal customers.
- Conduct design FMEAs and execute resulting risk mitigation plans to ensure knowledge gaps, failures (FRACAS), and DFMEA items are resolved, minimizing the potential for quality escapes.
- Meet the needs of internal and external customers, through documenting, understanding and prioritizing customer requirements.
- Apply technical expertise to solve design problems or to gauge appropriateness of product to various applications.
- Participate on and lead project teams to meet performance, reliability, cost, and schedule objectives.
- Provide technical support and guidance to laboratory technicians, manufacturing engineering, suppliers, technical service, and operations.
- Manage project schedules and teams for assigned projects.
- Overnight travel (less than 5%).
