About The Position
The Private Branch Exchange (PBX) Operator manages telephone calls for Centra hospitals and medical offices, including emergency line telephone calls. Working from a central switchboard, this position serves as a communications connection and provides information services to the public, physicians, patients, and staff. The operator is also responsible for responding rapidly to multiple alarms.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Responsibilities
- Operate communication systems, such as telephones, switchboards, intercoms, two-way radios, and public address systems.
- Answer incoming calls, greet callers, provide information, transfer calls, and take messages as necessary.
- Route emergency calls appropriately.
- Use paging or interoffice communication equipment to announce emergency codes.
- Relay or route written or verbal messages.
- Place telephone calls or arrange conference calls as instructed.
- Sort and distribute mail and place postage on outgoing mail.
- Monitor fire alarms to ensure that secure conditions are maintained.
- Contact security, housekeeping, and maintenance staff when necessary using radios or telephones.
- Keep records of calls placed for paging, on-call matters, and emergency codes.
- Follow appropriate confidentiality rules and regulations.
