About The Position

This role involves providing academic support to students within a prison education program. The tutor will assist students by clarifying assignments, enhancing subject-specific competencies, promoting independent learning, and fostering effective study practices. The position also requires maintaining records, promoting positive communication, and fostering a culture of belonging and respect within the college environment. The tutor will interact with colleagues, students, and staff to support instructional and institutional referral services.

Requirements

  • Completed at least one semester of College.
  • Completed intended courses to tutor with a Grade B or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic support during assigned hours.
  • Clarify instructions, information, and concepts of student assignments.
  • Assist students to increase subject-specific competencies.
  • Promote independent learning strategies to boost student self-confidence.
  • Promote effective study practices needed to master content.
  • Be punctual for appointments or assigned hours and notify the Director of appointment cancellations.
  • Interact with colleagues, students, and staff in a manner that promotes a positive image of SCC and the Tutoring and Learning Center.
  • Promote/support instructional and institutional referral services such as retention, accommodations, counseling, and/or other student services.
  • Maintain records associated with students receiving tutoring.
  • Assist in creating reports on tutoring data when needed.
  • Promote, support, and incorporate the College’s positive communication processes with reflective and transparent communication, compassion, and respect toward the views and ideas of others.
  • Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute.
  • Foster a community where each individual and their varied perspectives enrich the educational experience and create a safe and respectful environment.
  • Support the College’s policies and programming related to access, fair employment, and equal opportunities for all.
