About The Position

Children’s Wisconsin is seeking a Principle Network Engineer to provide advanced engineering and technical leadership for the enterprise networks supporting clinical and business operations. The role assesses the existing network environment, recommends modernization and optimization, and leads the design, implementation, and support of secure, scalable network solutions. Its scope includes enterprise routing and switching, campus and data center networking, wireless connectivity, wide area networks, and connectivity to Azure and AWS. The engineer serves as a senior technical escalation resource and leads assigned work in partnership with Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, Information Security, and Client Services, exercising technical judgment within approved standards and change authority. The position also mentors network engineers, develops operational network automation, supports hybrid cloud connectivity, and improves network reliability, security, and repeatability. The work includes troubleshooting complex incidents, coordinating changes and service restoration, maintaining standards and lifecycle plans, supporting resilience and security controls, and coordinating with vendors and internal teams. The role is hybrid, and the employee must be local to the Milwaukee area.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field, or relevant experience.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible network engineering experience, including advanced design, implementation, and troubleshooting in a complex enterprise environment.
  • At least 7 years serving as a technical escalation resource, leading significant network changes, and mentoring or providing technical guidance to other engineers.
  • At least 7 years of advanced hands-on experience with Cisco enterprise routing and switching, IP addressing, routing protocols, network segmentation, high availability, Cisco ACI, and data center networking technologies.
  • At least 7 years of advanced working knowledge of wireless networking, VPN connectivity, DNS and DHCP dependencies, and network security principles.
  • At least 7 years of practical experience developing and maintaining network automation used in an operational environment through infrastructure as code, configuration management, scripting, or APIs.
  • At least 7 years of experience following controlled change practices and coordinating across technical teams.
  • Ability to explain technical decisions, document designs and procedures, and guide peers constructively.
  • Ability and willingness to develop and apply Azure and AWS networking skills as part of the role.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 7 years of experience with tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Python, or comparable technologies, including version control, testing, and documentation.
  • Experience in healthcare or other environments requiring continuous service availability.
  • Relevant Cisco certifications, including CCNP or CCIE.
  • Cloud networking certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise Cisco network services, evaluating routing, switching, segmentation, redundancy, capacity, and performance across clinical and business locations.
  • Develop practical network designs that account for application dependencies, operational support, security, and recovery requirements.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentoring to network engineers; review designs, configurations, automation code, and implementation plans and share knowledge through pairing and troubleshooting.
  • Help the manager sequence technical work and identify skills gaps while building shared ownership and reducing dependence on individual experts.
  • Lead diagnosis of complex network incidents and recurring problems using packet captures, telemetry, logs, and routing analysis.
  • Coordinate service restoration with service owners and the major incident process, document root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain reusable automation for provisioning, configuration, validation, inventory, and operational tasks using infrastructure as code, scripting, and APIs.
  • Apply version control, peer review, testing, secure credential handling, and rollback practices to ensure automated changes are controlled and repeatable.
  • Develop and apply Azure and AWS networking skills to design and support connectivity between Children’s Wisconsin locations and cloud environments.
  • Work with cloud and security engineers on address planning, routing, private connectivity, DNS dependencies, segmentation, resilient access, end-to-end connectivity validation, and documentation of support responsibilities.
  • Lead assigned network implementations, upgrades, and migrations, preparing implementation procedures, impact assessments, test plans, rollback steps, and support handoffs.
  • Follow enterprise ITSM and change processes, coordinate maintenance with affected teams, and validate service performance after changes.
  • Maintain network diagrams, configuration standards, operating procedures, and accurate inventory and configuration records.
  • Evaluate lifecycle risks, capacity needs, and technology options; provide technical recommendations and cost inputs to management and Enterprise Architecture; test proposed solutions before production adoption.
  • Implement approved network safeguards and address assigned vulnerabilities in coordination with Information Security.
  • Validate redundancy, failover, configuration backups, and recovery procedures; support secure connectivity for clinical systems and connected medical devices with application owners and Clinical Engineering.
  • Coordinate with carriers, vendors, and internal teams to resolve technical issues and deliver network changes.
  • Coordinate network dependencies for wireless, voice and collaboration, endpoints, applications, and cloud platforms; review vendor technical deliverables and communicate risks, dependencies, and progress.
