Principle Engineer, Product Quality
About The Position
Ayar Labs is seeking a strategic and technical Principal Product Quality Engineer to ensure world-class products and quality levels. As a fabless semiconductor and module developer and provider, the company depends on coordination among its internal design, manufacturing, external partners, and quality functions. The role owns quality for one or more products and works across design, test, firmware, operations, manufacturing, and engineering to prevent and resolve quality issues, ensure compliance with company and ISO 9001 standards, and build quality into products from the outset. The position defines and maintains product Design FMEAs, supports Process FMEAs, and works with engineering, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to establish quality criteria. It participates in design and program reviews, approves gates and ECOs/DCOs, coordinates BOM entries, and develops metrics to monitor performance and proactively identify risks. The position is based on-site in San Jose.
Requirements
- 10 to 12 years of experience in Quality, Engineering, and/or Operations in the semiconductor and/or electronics industries; experience in software or pharmaceuticals does not meet this requirement.
- Deep experience managing and auditing an established QMS, such as ISO 9001 and/or IATF 16949.
- Deep experience managing quality through external foundries, OSATs, and/or Tier 1 contract manufacturers.
- Strong understanding of semiconductor manufacturing and/or advanced packaging, and/or familiarity with photonics, transceivers, or laser module assembly (ELSFP).
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Quality Management Software such as Arena, Propel, or ETQ is highly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Own quality for one or more products within Ayar Labs product families, collaborating across design, test, firmware, operations, manufacturing, and engineering to achieve quality goals.
- Use existing quality systems and develop new ones to identify and minimize risk before issues occur, address issues promptly, and drive quality into products from the beginning.
- Ensure products meet Ayar Labs and ISO 9001 quality standards across functions including document control, revision control, Material Review Board, Change Action Board, calibration, and product traceability.
- Lead, track, and resolve product quality issues; facilitate cross-functional, multi-location meetings to identify root causes and preventive actions.
- Define and facilitate Design FMEAs across disciplines and own them over the product lifecycle; support Process FMEAs with Manufacturing Quality Engineering.
- Define and influence supplier and manufacturing quality criteria, and work with Engineering to review and approve new designs and suppliers.
- Participate in, influence, and lead design-quality activities, including status meetings, program reviews, gate reviews, and design review meetings.
- Review and approve gates and ECOs/DCOs.
- Coordinate BOM entries with engineering, supply chain, and operations.
- Develop key metrics to predict quality and monitor progress toward goals.
- Establish real-time data connections with partners and monitor SPC and FPY to identify trends before they become field issues.
