Principal Staff Electrical Engineer - Radio Device Engineer

Motorola Solutions•Plantation, FL
•$128,800 - $165,600•Onsite

About The Position

Motorola Solutions’ Advanced Development Engineering team in Plantation, Florida, designs and develops mission-critical communications equipment, including RF modems, integrated circuits, and related circuit modules and subsystems. The Radio Device System Engineer develops RF transceiver systems using commercial off-the-shelf ICs and custom CMOS technologies for high-reliability public safety communications equipment. The role conceives, designs, and implements radio systems using semiconductor devices and custom mixed-signal digital, RF, and analog circuits and subsystems, applying robust design methodologies for two-way radio products. The position requires 100% onsite presence Monday through Friday at the Plantation engineering facility. The engineer translates product-level radio requirements into mixed-signal SoC architectural specifications; develops system models and manages block-level specifications; evaluates and integrates third-party IP and commercial ICs; and develops power-modeling and thermal-management strategies. The role collaborates with digital, analog layout, firmware/software, verification, and test teams through specification, silicon tape-out, bring-up, and product deployment. It also includes working with external contractors and documenting system requirements, operation, troubleshooting, and engineering and manufacturing test procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 16 years of radio transceiver design experience.
  • Solid experience modeling, designing, and verifying analog/mixed-signal circuit blocks and feedback control systems, such as PLL and AGC subsystems, using Cadence or equivalent CAD tools.
  • Knowledge of multi-loop feedback control systems and modeling.
  • Experience assessing third-party IP and commercial off-the-shelf ICs for modem development.
  • Experience with embedded processors.
  • Experience with digital signal processing for modulation and demodulation in faded radio-channel environments.
  • Experience implementing high-speed interfaces, including HyperRAM, MIPI, LPDDR, and Ethernet, in a radio modem and mitigating their interaction with RF signal processing.
  • Knowledge of SoC power-management architectures, clocking schemes, and voltage domains.
  • Experience with Verilog-A, Verilog-AMS, SystemVerilog, and UVM for digital and analog/mixed-signal designs.
  • Familiarity with shell and scripting languages.
  • Experience as a technical team leader providing direction to technical staff developing radio transceivers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to drive technical alignment across multidisciplinary global teams.
  • Proven radio transceiver development from concept through shipping product.
  • Background in RF and mixed-signal IC and RF PCB design.

Responsibilities

  • Translate product-level radio requirements into architectural specifications for mixed-signal SoCs and their subsystems.
  • Communicate and work with radio product development hardware and software architects to meet product requirements.
  • Develop behavioral system models to determine and manage block-level specifications for radio modem hardware, firmware, and software components.
  • Arbitrate block-level specification adjustments to achieve system performance goals in finished silicon and radio products.
  • Collaborate with internal and external IP providers to evaluate and integrate high-speed analog peripherals and ADC/DAC data converters.
  • Develop power-modeling and thermal-management strategies across operating modes and low-power states.
  • Work with digital design, analog layout, firmware/software, verification, and test engineering teams from specification through tape-out, bring-up, and deployment.
  • Work with external contractor subject-matter experts to define and implement specialized subsystems in custom IC designs.
  • Document transceiver and subsystem requirements, theory of operation, functional operating instructions, troubleshooting, and engineering and manufacturing test procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to other technical staff in radio transceiver development.
