Principal Software Engineer, Core Infrastructure - OCI Networking

Oracle•Nashville, TN
•$114,600 - $234,600

About The Position

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) builds and manages large-scale, integrated cloud services in a distributed, multi-tenant environment. This role is part of the Virtual Networking Control Plane organization, which manages networking resources in virtual and functional layers and serves internal OCI teams and external customers using virtual networking APIs and workflows. The Virtual Networking team delivers Network-as-a-Service for planning, provisioning, lifecycle management, and security of customers’ network infrastructure, combining the flexibility and simplicity of virtual networking with the manageability and control of software-defined networking. The Principal Software Engineer will lead development and implementation of scalable, reliable, and correct distributed systems for OCI networking. The role includes designing system architecture, scaling and performance strategies, fault-tolerant services, monitoring and testing approaches, and operational processes. It also involves security and compliance implementation, infrastructure automation, and change management, alongside operational support and mentoring.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation, and begin architecting, scalable distributed-system components, including use of distributed state-management tools.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and high throughput, and define and meet scalability requirements for owned components.
  • Design systems for elastic scaling, use data-plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing, and design performance and load testing.
  • Build fault-tolerant systems that support in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Design systems to handle service disruptions and network partitions, and implement load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting approaches.
  • Design durable components and systems that adhere to service level objectives, including expectations for availability and durability of other departmental computing services.
  • Define KPIs and telemetry, and build and customize dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting to monitor component and system health.
  • Design and implement functional and correctness requirements for features and systems.
  • Design complex test scenarios, including fault-injection and brown-out tests, and implement data replication and synchronization to maintain integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in active systems; mentor others in operational troubleshooting and incident response.
  • Implement strategies to prevent service interruptions and customer maintenance windows when resolving issues.
  • Maintain expertise in owned systems, meet operational readiness expectations through design and implementation, and participate in operational support rotations and root-cause investigations.
  • Implement security measures for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls; execute remediation plans and maintain compliance with industry standards and regulations and up-to-date documentation.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools, including Infrastructure as Code, to manage cloud infrastructure.
  • Create and follow change-management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications, and begin designing systems to automate these processes.
