Principal Site Reliability Engineer

Oracle•Nashville, TN

About The Position

Oracle Health’s Core Platform Operations team supports the core platforms that run Millennium, including Linux infrastructure, Application Tier, WebSphere, Distributed File Systems, Business Objects, and Citrix. The team works to keep these platforms reliable, secure, and maintainable for healthcare organizations. Its work connects Linux engineering with the behavior of services running above it, using approaches such as rolling maintenance, canary environments, and maintenance orchestration to reduce manual effort and human error. The Principal Site Reliability Engineer manages, maintains, and enhances physical and virtual Linux servers across production and nonproduction environments. The role applies technical judgment to system configuration, performance tuning, security patching, capacity planning, and complex troubleshooting, and helps shape team standards and tools. It is a hands-on individual contributor position with technical leadership responsibilities, including guiding engineering decisions, mentoring colleagues, participating in on-call support, and serving as an escalation resource for assigned services. The engineer collaborates with application, networking, security, and infrastructure partners to resolve operational problems and improve engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience administering and troubleshooting Linux systems in production, including physical and virtual server environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux internals, system services, processes, permissions, filesystems, logs, and resource utilization, including investigation of performance and stability issues.
  • Practical scripting and automation experience with Bash, Python, Ansible, or comparable tools, including testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining reusable solutions.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/S, ports, certificates, and connectivity troubleshooting across application and infrastructure dependencies.
  • Experience with security patching, vulnerability remediation, secure configuration, access controls, and production change management.
  • Experience monitoring system health, responding to incidents, investigating root causes, and implementing improvements that reduce recurring problems.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through engineering decisions, cross-team collaboration, mentoring, and clear documentation.
  • A curious, methodical approach to problem solving and the ability to explain findings, tradeoffs, risks, and next steps to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • At least 11 years of experience in software engineering, infrastructure management, or a related field; or a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and 7 years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree in one of those fields and 5 years; or a doctorate in one of those fields and 3 years.
  • 5 years of experience in automation.
  • 5 years of experience in programming and/or scripting.
  • Demonstrated ability or knowledge in incident management and response, troubleshooting, virtualization, and security tools.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and troubleshooting databases and applying SRE best practices for reliability and recovery.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting Oracle Health, Millennium, Cerner applications, or other healthcare or regulated production environments.
  • Experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or other cloud platforms, hybrid environments, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Familiarity with middleware and application hosting, including WebSphere or WebLogic, and the Linux infrastructure those services depend on.
  • Experience with configuration management, infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, REST APIs, observability, or resilience and recovery testing.
  • Preferred experience qualification: 11 years in software engineering, infrastructure management, or a related field; or a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and 7 years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree in one of those fields and 5 years; or a doctorate in one of those fields and 3 years.
  • 7 years of experience in automation.
  • 7 years of experience in programming and/or scripting.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, update, maintain, and troubleshoot physical and virtual Linux servers across production and nonproduction environments, focusing on availability, performance, stability, and security.
  • Evaluate infrastructure configurations and service dependencies, identify failure points, and recommend improvements to reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Analyze CPU, memory, storage, filesystem, process, and network behavior; forecast resource needs, investigate bottlenecks, and tune systems using measured results.
  • Improve metrics, logging, health checks, and actionable alerts; use service trends and service-level objectives to identify degradation and prioritize engineering work.
  • Diagnose complex incidents across operating systems, applications, networking, storage, and related dependencies; coordinate with partner teams to restore service and communicate findings.
  • Perform root cause analysis and post-incident reviews, translating findings into corrective actions, improved diagnostics, runbooks, and engineering improvements.
  • Apply security patches and updates, remediate vulnerabilities, strengthen configurations and access controls, and maintain compliance with applicable security standards and policies.
  • Plan production maintenance and changes, assess dependencies and risk, prepare rollback procedures, and validate system and application behavior after changes.
  • Develop, test, document, and maintain Bash, Python, Ansible, or comparable automation for configuration, maintenance, monitoring, and recovery; use version control and peer review.
  • Partner with developers, network engineers, security teams, and other IT staff on deployments, environment readiness, connectivity, and server-related requirements.
  • Help validate backup, restore, and recovery procedures for assigned systems and address gaps that could delay service restoration.
  • Maintain architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, and change records; mentor colleagues, share knowledge, and communicate technical risks and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and planned maintenance, provide escalation support for assigned services, and improve support documentation and tooling.
  • Guide engineering decisions and contribute to team standards and tools.
