Principal Product Engineer - Advanced Technology

nLIGHT•Camas, WA
•$125,000 - $160,000

About The Position

nLIGHT is seeking a Principal Advanced Technology Product Development Engineer to lead and contribute to a multidisciplinary team designing, documenting, and releasing high-power semiconductor lasers and laser systems to production. The role focuses on mechanical and thermal management design for laser diode packages, systems, products, and assembly tooling, as well as establishing and qualifying diode laser assembly and test processes. The engineer conducts finite element thermal, fluid, and mechanical stress modeling for high-precision, high-heat-load opto-mechanical assemblies; develops and qualifies assembly tooling and electro-optic test equipment; works with vendors to assess designs and reduce component cost and complexity; and plans and executes design verification, environmental, and accelerated-life testing. The position requires a minimum bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a comparable field, along with at least 10 years of relevant experience. nLIGHT identifies an MS degree and experience in several related technical areas as preferred. The successful candidate must be a US Person under US Export Control regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a comparable field of study.
  • At least 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, thermal management, semiconductor packaging, or a closely related role.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, finite element analysis, and project management.
  • Ability to conduct engineering analyses, including advanced materials selection; thermal, fluid, and mechanical modeling; mechanical and/or optical tolerances; and assembly and test equipment evaluation.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with clear and professional written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal guidance in defining specifications and requirements, assuring customer needs are addressed, and delivering fully documented solutions.
  • Must be a US Person: a US citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual granted asylum or refugee status.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a comparable field of study.
  • Experience leading engineers and technicians to meet program goals.
  • Experience with high-heat-load electronic or laser assemblies.
  • Experience with precision opto-mechanical design and optoelectronic packaging.
  • Experience with optical adhesives, solder attachment, and/or semiconductor packaging.
  • Experience with electro-optic test equipment and procedures.
  • Experience with ANSYS or other finite element software.
  • Experience with LabVIEW or other data acquisition software.
  • Experience with ZEMAX or other optical design software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical and thermal management design for new laser diode packages, systems, products, and assembly tooling.
  • Work with advanced technology and product development teams to establish and qualify diode laser assembly processes and test procedures.
  • Conduct finite element thermal, fluid, and mechanical stress modeling for high-precision, high-heat-load opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • Devise, design, build, and qualify robust assembly tooling and electro-optic test equipment.
  • Work with relevant vendors to evaluate new product designs and reduce component cost and complexity.
  • Plan and execute design verification test protocols, including environmental and accelerated-life testing.
  • Define specifications and requirements, address customer needs, and deliver fully documented solutions.
