Principal Product Designer, Visual (Merchant)

DoorDash USA•Seattle, WA
•$208,800 - $307,000•Hybrid

About The Position

DoorDash is seeking a Principal Designer to set the look, feel, and identity of its merchant products. The role owns visual direction for DashOS, the software restaurants use to run their business, across agentic experiences, point-of-sale, handheld, tablet, mobile, and web. The goal is to make these products enjoyable to use and give them a recognizable identity across every surface, including hardware where established design conventions may not exist. Visual craft is central to the position. The designer uses code and AI tools to prototype and ship high-fidelity work, including React and tools such as Cursor and Claude. They define the visual foundation of the design system—tokens, components, guidance, and examples—so designers, engineers, and AI tools can create on-brand, high-quality interfaces. Engineering partners build and maintain the tooling; the designer sets the rules and quality bar. The role is part of the Merchant design team and reports to the Senior Director, Product Design for Merchant. It is hybrid, with 1–2 days per week in a Design Hub. The designer will establish direction across teams, influence through prototypes and shipped products, mentor senior designers, contribute to hiring, and help teams build consistent visual systems for complex merchant workflows and new product surfaces.

Requirements

  • Portfolio demonstrating top-level visual craft and range across brands and styles.
  • Experience designing interfaces that defined or reshaped a product’s look and feel.
  • Ability to build designs using React, TypeScript, or similar tools.
  • Experience using AI tools to explore design directions and refine UI.
  • Experience setting direction across a product area and gaining adoption through the quality of the work.
  • Ability to build visual systems that help designers work faster and more consistently.
  • Experience with complex, information-dense products such as point-of-sale, fintech, marketplaces, or platform products.
  • Experience shipping work with product and engineering partners, including constructively pushing back.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing for devices or contexts with no existing design paradigm and building the visual system from scratch.

Responsibilities

  • Set the visual direction for merchant products across DashOS and align multiple teams around a shared vision.
  • Create high-craft interfaces that make complex, data-dense workflows easy to read in busy merchant environments.
  • Define and maintain the visual foundation of the design system, including tokens, components, usage rules, and examples.
  • Review generated UI against the design quality bar, document examples of good work, and improve the system based on team usage.
  • Design visual systems for new surfaces, including point-of-sale devices, handhelds, and agentic experiences.
  • Influence through prototypes and shipped products, and keep prototypes production-ready.
  • Mentor senior designers, help close strong hires, and help teammates clarify what to build and why.
  • Use code and AI tools to prototype, generate, refine, and ship interfaces.
