Principal Modeling Simulation and Analysis Systems Engineer

Northrop Grumman•Baltimore, MD
•$108,800 - $163,200•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman is hiring a Principal Modeling Simulation and Analysis Systems Engineer to join its Modeling, Simulation and Analysis Section and broader Systems Engineering team in Baltimore, Maryland. The position is 100% on-site and contingent upon contract award, the ability to obtain an active U.S. Government Secret Clearance, and special program access (SAP). The engineer will apply modeling, simulation, experimentation, and analysis (MSE&A) to radar systems engineering and mission operations. Work includes performance engineering, software integration, mission studies, system-of-systems trades, and test activities. The role uses simulated and real-world IQ data, traces data through the radar processing chain, and works with modeling and simulation, radar mode, and mission engineering teams to identify deficiencies and optimize system, subsystem, and mission performance. The engineer will use high-performance computing to conduct performance-focused simulations, alternatives analyses, mission architecture trades, and trade studies. They will support software integration, algorithm development, radar mode validation, mission and operational concept evaluation, requirements and performance assessment, system integration and testing, and verification and validation. The role also develops performance models, simulation frameworks, analysis tools, visualizations, and technical materials, and provides mission effects planning, sustainment, and mission augmentation support. The position requires a qualifying STEM or related technical degree and relevant experience, or additional experience in lieu of a degree, as well as U.S. citizenship, a final Secret clearance, and the ability to obtain or maintain SAP access. Northrop Grumman offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a health plan, savings plan, paid time off, education assistance, training and development, and a 9/80 work schedule where available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience, Master’s degree and 3 years of experience, or Ph.D. and 1 year of experience in STEM or a related technical field; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • A final U.S. Government Secret Clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) access.
  • Experience in modeling, simulation, experimentation, and analysis, including operational applications, and use of analytical modeling tools such as MATLAB, STK, or similar environments.
  • Knowledge of combat simulation environments such as AFSIM and/or Brawler.
  • Proficiency in Python and C/C++, with experience in Linux/Windows scripting, statistics, design of experiments, and high-performance computing.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in STEM or a related technical field.
  • Current or active Secret Clearance or higher.
  • Experience with JMP, R, or other domain-specific environments for data exploration, visualization, and statistical analysis.
  • Domain experience in simulations of RF, EOIR, communications, or related systems.
  • Experience with DoD testing and acquisition principles, including hands-on developmental testing and weapon test planning and execution.
  • Understanding of systems engineering and integration and test processes.
  • Experience with Agile and/or SAFe methodologies.
  • Experience optimizing multiple subsystem performance within a large solution space.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership with small teams and/or mentoring.

Responsibilities

  • Perform performance-focused modeling and simulation on high-performance computing grids to evaluate and optimize system and subsystem behavior.
  • Conduct analysis of alternatives and mission architecture trades across offensive and defensive orders of battle, formations, equipment, platforms, sensor and weapon loadouts, communications, command and control, tactics, and strategies.
  • Conduct trade studies and generate systems engineering documents, reports, operational documentation, and mission analysis products.
  • Use MSE&A frameworks to support software integration, algorithm development, radar mode validation, and evaluation of CONEMPS, CONOPS, and Design Reference Missions.
  • Assess system capabilities by linking system and subsystem requirements to performance metrics and mission threads, defining and verifying interfaces, planning verification and validation, and supporting integration and test activities.
  • Support radar algorithm validation by tracing IQ data through the radar processing chain, comparing modeled and collected data, and identifying performance shortfalls and corrective actions.
  • Plan, generate, and execute verification and validation artifacts for system design verification and acceptance testing, including test plans, procedures, and data review packages.
  • Plan demonstrations and delivery of mission effects, data, or capabilities during operations, and provide long-term sustainment and mission augmentation support.
  • Develop and improve performance models, simulation frameworks, and analysis tools, including physics-based radar, threat, environment, command-and-control, and mission-level models.
  • Perform large-scale data analytics, probability and statistical analysis, and design-of-experiments evaluations of system and mission performance, algorithm robustness, and sensitivity to key parameters.
  • Collaborate with modeling and simulation, software, radar modes, systems integration and test, and mission engineering teams to diagnose issues, analyze mission effectiveness, recommend design changes or tuning, and meet performance requirements.
  • Generate and present technical material for customer briefings, technical reviews, and design and test readiness events.
  • Identify and implement improvements to MSE&A products, performance analysis workflows, operational analysis, and integration and test approaches.
  • Model operational environments, conduct computer-simulation trade studies, and recommend alternative architectures.
  • Develop, integrate, and use advanced graphical user interfaces and visualization tools to explore, validate, and communicate performance and mission analysis results.
