Principal Full Stack Software Engineer (P60) — Growth

Atlassian•San Francisco, CA
•$174,051 - $273,775•Hybrid

About The Position

As a Principal Full Stack Software Engineer on Atlassian’s Growth team, you will serve as the lead technical anchor for multi-quarter onboarding and cross-flow initiatives across products including Confluence, Loom, and Jira. You will connect frontend micro-frontends with backend integration services and experimentation infrastructure, while setting technical direction across product boundaries. The role combines hands-on engineering—approximately 60–70% of the work—with architecture, experimentation, cross-functional leadership, operational improvements, and mentorship. You will build complex full-stack features, define shared integration patterns and API contracts, and lead modernization and consolidation of onboarding and activation journeys. You will partner with Product Management, Product Design, and Data Science to develop and analyze experiments, and collaborate with product and platform engineering teams to deliver cohesive experiences. Atlassian allows employees to work from an office, from home, or a combination of the two, and can hire in countries where it has a legal entity. Compensation includes geographic base-pay ranges in the United States; the role may also be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.

Requirements

  • 8–12+ years of full-stack software engineering experience, with demonstrated Staff- or Principal-level impact leading large, ambiguous, multi-team initiatives.
  • Deep experience in growth-focused areas such as onboarding, activation, conversion funnels, viral loops, or product-led expansion.
  • Strong familiarity with statistical experimentation, including minimum detectable effects, statistical power, and guardrail metrics.
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript, React, modern state management, frontend performance optimization, micro-frontends, and accessible component architectures.
  • Strong proficiency in backend service development using Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python; GraphQL or REST APIs; microservices; and AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience designing extensible APIs and shared UI components that integrate across multiple independent host applications.
  • Hands-on experience with telemetry pipelines, event-tracking schema design, and SQL or analytics tools for diagnosing funnel drop-offs and attribution.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a proven ability to align engineers, product managers, designers, and data scientists around complex architectural trade-offs.

Responsibilities

  • Define technical vision and architecture for multi-product onboarding and cross-flow experiences across Confluence, Loom, and Jira.
  • Build production-grade full-stack features using React/TypeScript micro-frontends and scalable backend microservices.
  • Design robust GraphQL and REST API contracts and modular micro-frontend components that integrate with host applications.
  • Write technical specifications and RFCs, evaluate build-versus-buy decisions, and drive technical consensus across engineering squads and platform teams.
  • Partner with Product Managers and Data Scientists to design, instrument, and launch A/B and multivariate experiments using tools such as Statsig and feature flags.
  • Structure frontend and backend code so experiments can be launched, modified, and cleaned up efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate event logging, funnel telemetry, attribution, and data fidelity.
  • Build critical paths, shared libraries, and proof-of-concept prototypes, with approximately 60–70% hands-on work.
  • Consolidate and modernize onboarding and activation flows, decommission legacy flows, and develop reusable cross-flow patterns.
  • Work with Product Management, Product Design, Data Science, and core product and platform teams to resolve dependencies and host-application constraints.
  • Protect application performance, reliability, observability, and host-page load times, including core web vitals.
  • Improve automated testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and alerting to reduce operational toil, on-call burden, and recurring hotfixes.
  • Mentor senior and lead engineers on system design, technical writing, and growth engineering practices.
  • Lead code and architecture reviews, promote engineering standards, and contribute to hiring and interview loops.

Benefits

  • Health and wellbeing resources
  • Paid volunteer days
  • The role may also be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.
