About The Position

Yourgi is seeking its first Principal Engineer to set technical direction for cloud services, service design, and data across API, web, and mobile. The role owns the architecture of the software platform and leads by designing, prototyping, reviewing, coding, and delivering straightforward solutions to complex and ambiguous problems. Yourgi is rebuilding its delivery approach around AI-first workflows from specification through deployment, automated testing, production monitoring, and continuous delivery. The position is remote within the United States; candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S., and visa sponsorship is not available. The role reports to the VP of Engineering and offers a base salary of $275,000 plus a 20% bonus. During the first 30 days, the Principal Engineer will map the architecture, data stores, technical risks, and sources of production issues; meet with each pod and its leads; and review the current-state architecture and data map with the VP of Engineering, ranking the top 10 technical risks. By day 60, the role will publish the target architecture, establish direction for the data model, align API contract and schema standards with the Head of Backend Services, and publish the first five architectural decision records. By day 90, the role will partner with a pod to launch the first target-architecture component, evaluate an AI-assisted workflow end to end on a live project, deliver a measurable architecture improvement to production, and align with leadership on the next phase of the technical roadmap. Yourgi builds a pet-care marketplace and software platform for pet parents and independent professionals, supporting services such as grooming, boarding, daycare, and training. Its products include Yourgi Pro, Connect, and Match, and it also powers booking for Destination Pet locations.

Requirements

  • 12+ years building and running production software, including 4+ years as a staff-, principal-, or architect-level engineer.
  • Deep experience with AWS cloud services, serverless and event-driven systems, and microservice-to-platform migrations.
  • A track record designing APIs, services, and data models relied on by multiple teams and client versions.
  • Strong relational database design and performance-tuning skills with MySQL or PostgreSQL, including schema evolution in live systems.
  • Hands-on experience with modern testing, CI/CD, and observability, with demonstrated ability to make a team faster and more stable.
  • Practical experience using AI coding and agent tools on real codebases, with sound judgment about where they are useful.
  • Clear writing and the ability to persuade through design documentation rather than authority.
  • Authorization to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with marketplace, booking, scheduling, or payments systems, including Stripe.
  • Experience with analytics data architecture, including pipelines, a data lake or warehouse such as Snowflake, and event tracking.
  • Experience with mobile apps that must support older versions in the field.
  • Technical leadership through an organizational or platform transformation.

Responsibilities

  • Own the target AWS cloud-services architecture and roadmap, including simplifying the Lambda services estate and reducing reliance on legacy partner systems.
  • Define service boundaries, event and API patterns, and versioned, backward-compatible contracts for older app versions.
  • Own database design and optimization, including data models, schema standards, query and index performance, and the evolution from current MySQL databases toward a well-governed data architecture.
  • Write architecture and design documentation and chair reviews for changes that cross teams or affect payments, booking, or customer data.
  • Raise engineering standards for code review, testing from unit through end-to-end and performance testing, observability, and performance budgets such as P75 latency.
  • Partner with Engineering Services on CI/CD, unattended deployments and rollbacks, and production monitoring.
  • Shape a specification-driven, AI-assisted delivery workflow with product and design, from PRD through stories, code, tests, and deployment.
  • Mentor senior engineers and tech leads, help with hiring, and assess build-versus-buy decisions with cloud, AI, and third-party costs in view.
  • Map the current architecture, data stores, technical risks, and production-issue sources; meet with pods and leads and rank the top 10 technical risks with the VP of Engineering.
  • Publish the target architecture, establish data-model direction, align API contract and schema standards with the Head of Backend Services, and publish the first five architectural decision records.
  • Partner with a pod to implement and launch the first target-architecture component, evaluate an AI-assisted workflow on a live project, deliver a measurable production improvement, and align on the next technical roadmap.
