About The Position

Moneyhub is a data and payments company that builds ISO 27001-certified software for Open Banking, Open Finance, and Open Data. Its FCA-regulated platform helps organisations turn financial data into personalised digital experiences and initiate payments. The Principal Engineer is an experienced, hands-on individual contributor who has repeatedly taken products from inception to real end users and continued to support them after launch. The role focuses on shipping useful software, improving system scale and performance through measurement and profiling, and influencing technical direction without line-managing others. The engineer will use agentic engineering tools in their day-to-day work and help establish effective practices for colleagues. During the first 6–12 months, the engineer may ship committed work to production, identify further platform improvements, take a project from prototype to production, and establish agentic engineering workflows that other teams adopt. Success includes a steady record of shipped work and at least two architectural patterns or AI standards in use across engineering. The role is part of an engineering organisation of about 40 software, platform, and data engineers and data scientists. The team uses Shape Up to shape bets, deliver committed work, and complete projects. The role offers latitude in problem-solving and selecting work, while expecting visible, shared contributions aligned with business needs. It is an individual contributor role with no line management and continued hands-on coding. The platform is primarily TypeScript on Node, with Python used in data science and machine learning, Kafka for events, Postgres for most data, and Kubernetes on AWS. The role calls for comfort working across data science, Python, Node, React, and Rust, with willingness to pick up unfamiliar languages. This is a full-time employment contract based in the UK or Slovenia. Candidates must live and have the right to work in one of those countries, or be willing to relocate to Slovenia. Offers are subject to pre-employment screening, including reference, credit, and criminal record checks.

Requirements

  • Experience at several startups and working on systems at real scale, shipping software used by people.
  • A track record of building and running production software across different companies and codebases, including after launch.
  • Experience setting technical direction and being a trusted resource when difficult problems arise, without authority over the people doing the work.
  • Ability to find, diagnose, and fix performance bottlenecks under real load using profilers and flame charts, across frontend rendering and low-level algorithm or memory behaviour.
  • Comfort across Python, Node, React, Rust, and data science; expertise in every area is not required, but willingness to learn unfamiliar languages is expected.
  • Ability to work effectively with data scientists and understand model evaluation measures such as precision, recall, and F1 score and their implications for products and clients.
  • A hands-on approach and intention to remain hands-on.
  • Current day-to-day use of agentic tools to increase productivity.
  • Ability to identify worthwhile work and make the case for it rather than waiting for a brief.
  • Sound judgement on security, privacy, and client trust in regulated financial software.
  • Clear communication with engineers, senior stakeholders, and clients.
  • Right to work in the UK or Slovenia, or willingness to relocate to Slovenia; candidates must live in one of those countries or be willing to relocate to Slovenia.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment screening, including reference, credit, and criminal record checks.
