About The Position

Moneyhub is a data and payments company providing ISO 27001-certified software for Open Banking, Open Finance and Open Data. Its FCA-regulated platform helps organisations use financial data to create personalised digital experiences and initiate payments. The Principal Engineer is an experienced, hands-on individual contributor who has repeatedly taken products from inception to real end users and continued to build and operate them after launch. The role combines production software delivery, performance investigation and optimisation, technical leadership without line management, and the adoption of agentic engineering practices. The successful candidate will remain close to the code while helping influence what teams build and setting technical patterns used across engineering. During the first 6–12 months, the engineer may ship committed work to production, identify follow-on platform improvements, take a project from prototype to production, and help establish reusable agentic engineering workflows. Success includes a sustained record of shipped work and at least two architectural patterns or AI standards adopted across engineering. The engineer will work within the company’s Shape Up process, shaping bets and delivering committed work with teams. The position offers autonomy in solving problems and some latitude in selecting work, while requiring work to be visible, shared with colleagues and aligned with business needs. It is an individual contributor role with no line management and no move away from coding. The engineering organisation includes approximately 40 software, platform and data engineers and data scientists. The platform primarily uses TypeScript on Node, with Python for data science and machine learning, Kafka for events, Postgres for most data, and Kubernetes on AWS. The role calls for comfort across data science, Python, Node, React and Rust, with willingness to learn unfamiliar languages.

Requirements

  • Experience at several startups and with systems at real scale, shipping software that end users actually used.
  • A track record of building and running production software across different companies and codebases, including work after launch.
  • Experience providing technical direction and being a trusted resource when difficult problems arise, without formal authority over the people doing the work.
  • Experience finding and fixing performance bottlenecks under real load using profilers and flame charts rather than guesswork.
  • Comfort working across Python, Node, React, Rust and data science; expertise in every area is not required.
  • Ability to work effectively with data scientists and understand model evaluation metrics such as precision, recall and F1 score and their implications.
  • A strong preference to remain hands-on and continue writing code.
  • Current use of agentic tools in day-to-day work, with an ability to use them to increase effectiveness.
  • Ability to identify worthwhile work and make the case for it proactively.
  • Sound judgement on security, privacy and client trust in a regulated financial software environment.
  • Clear communication with engineers, senior stakeholders and clients.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Willingness to undergo pre-employment screening, including reference, credit and criminal record checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with open banking, connections or identity systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build, ship and operate production software used by end users, including continuing to improve it after launch.
  • Investigate performance problems under real load using profilers and flame charts, identify root causes and implement fixes across front-end and lower-level systems.
  • Take projects from prototype to production, including improving event processing or data pipelines for scale and reliability.
  • Influence technical direction and what teams build without relying on managerial authority.
  • Set technical patterns and standards, including demonstrating effective agentic engineering workflows for adoption by other teams.
  • Work within the Shape Up process to shape bets, deliver committed work and collaborate with teams to complete projects.
  • Make sound decisions about which work to pursue, communicate those decisions and keep work visible and aligned with business needs.
  • Work effectively with data scientists and understand how model metrics such as precision, recall and F1 score relate to products and clients.
  • Maintain sound judgement around security, privacy and client trust in regulated financial software.
