About The Position

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) builds and operates cloud services at global scale in a distributed, multi-tenant environment. The OCI FastConnect team delivers high-performance, highly available private connectivity between customer networks and OCI. This role leads the design and development of FastConnect control plane services that manage a globally distributed fleet of networking infrastructure. It drives technical decisions, develops resilient distributed systems and deployment and operations automation, and collaborates with engineering and operations teams to resolve production challenges, improve reliability, and mentor engineers. The work combines software development, systems engineering, infrastructure automation, and network operations. The engineer leads architecture and implementation of scalable control plane components; defines scalability, performance, availability, correctness, and security requirements; and designs testing, observability, fault tolerance, and operational practices. The role includes production troubleshooting, operational support rotations, incident response, change management, infrastructure-as-code development, project coordination, cross-team collaboration, mentoring, continuous improvement, and participation in hiring. Oracle lists a U.S. hiring range of $114,600 to $234,600 per annum for the stated locations. The position may also be eligible for bonus, equity, and compensation deferral. Oracle describes a comprehensive benefits package, including insurance, retirement savings, paid leave, parental leave, adoption assistance, employee stock purchase, and other benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of control plane components managing a globally distributed fleet of high-performance enterprise networking equipment.
  • Build scalable distributed systems, including distributed state management, and define and meet scalability requirements for owned components.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and high-throughput workloads; integrate with data plane platforms for data retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Design performance and load tests to validate capacity, scalability, and system behavior.
  • Design fault-tolerant components that support in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Define system behavior during service disruptions, including network partitions, and make explicit consistency and availability tradeoffs.
  • Implement load shedding, throttling, and rate limiting to manage overload and network unreliability.
  • Design systems to meet service level objectives for availability, performance, and durability, and establish requirements for dependent services.
  • Define and implement functional and correctness requirements for new and existing features.
  • Develop fault-injection, brownout, and other complex test scenarios to validate correctness and resilience.
  • Implement replication and synchronization mechanisms to preserve data integrity and availability.
  • Define performance indicators, metrics, and telemetry; build dashboards, monitoring, and alerts for actionable insight into system health.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve production issues; mentor others in troubleshooting and develop remediation approaches that minimize service disruption.
  • Maintain expertise in owned components and meet operational readiness requirements through design, implementation, testing, and documentation.
  • Participate in operational support rotations and guide incident response, root cause analysis, and preventive actions.
  • Implement security controls for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access management, remediate security gaps, and ensure compliance with applicable standards and requirements.
  • Develop and maintain tools and infrastructure as code to automate infrastructure management.
  • Create and follow change management plans for patching, deployment, and rollback; design components for automated updates, recovery, and operational workflows.
  • Own delivery of moderately complex projects, managing scope, priorities, dependencies, timelines, and technical requirements.
  • Coordinate work across contributors and projects, provide technical oversight, and adjust plans as resources or priorities change.
  • Work across teams to align expectations and deliver shared objectives; translate stakeholder and customer needs into practical technical solutions.
  • Resolve moderately complex problems through structured analysis, escalate critical issues with impact assessments and options, and document decisions and reusable solutions.
  • Expand technical expertise, stay current with industry practices and tools, seek and apply feedback, and coach and mentor junior engineers.
  • Identify and implement improvements to engineering processes, operational practices, and team workflows; evaluate alternatives and their impact on stakeholders.
