Principal Core Infrastructure Engineer

Oracle•Seattle, WA
•$114,600 - $234,600

About The Position

The Principal Core Infrastructure Engineer leads development and begins architecting components of scalable, elastic distributed systems. The role defines and enforces scalability requirements for owned components, optimizes code and data paths for high-throughput, hyper-scale workloads, and uses data plane platforms for large-scale retrieval, storage, and processing. The engineer designs fault-tolerant systems that support in-service upgrades through redundancy, replication, failover, and policies for network partitions. The role applies load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting to address network unreliability while meeting service level objectives (SLOs). It establishes KPIs and telemetry, builds proactive dashboards and alerts, and develops complex validation, replication, and synchronization approaches to support correctness and durability. The position also diagnoses production issues, mentors peers, and ensures operational readiness. It implements security controls, remediates identified security gaps, maintains compliance documentation, and develops infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and automation for safe patching, updates, and rollbacks within change-management plans. The role coordinates moderately complex work across projects, collaborates with organizational stakeholders, contributes to process improvement and talent development, and participates in operational support rotations and candidate interviews.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation, and begin architecting, components of scalable distributed systems, including distributed state management.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and high-throughput workloads.
  • Define scalability requirements for owned components and ensure design and implementation meet them.
  • Design systems to scale elastically, both up and down, and use data plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Design performance and load testing.
  • Design fault-tolerant components and systems that support in-service updates using redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Design approaches for service disruptions such as network partitions, considering consistency, availability, and partition tolerance.
  • Implement and optimize load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting to handle network unreliability.
  • Design durable components and systems that adhere to SLOs, and set expectations for availability and durability of other departmental computing services.
  • Define KPIs and telemetry to identify gaps or issues in running systems.
  • Build and customize dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerts to proactively monitor component and system health.
  • Design and implement functional and correctness requirements for features and systems.
  • Design complex test scenarios, including fault-injection and brown-out testing, to evaluate system correctness.
  • Implement data replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in active components and systems; mentor others in these processes.
  • Implement strategies to prevent interruptions and avoid customer-facing maintenance windows when resolving issues.
  • Maintain expertise in owned components and systems for troubleshooting and performance.
  • Meet operational readiness expectations through design and implementation; participate in operational support rotations and guide incident response and root cause investigations.
  • Implement security measures for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls, and execute remediation plans for security gaps.
  • Ensure cloud infrastructure complies with industry standards and regulations and keep documentation up to date.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools, including IaC, to manage cloud infrastructure.
  • Create and follow change-management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications; begin designing systems to automate these processes.
  • Coordinate moderately complex tasks, timelines, deliverables, and work across projects; provide technical oversight and adjust plans as resources or timelines change.
  • Collaborate across the organization and with business leaders, stakeholders, and customers to align expectations and meet needs; seek and listen to diverse perspectives.
  • Analyze information to address moderately complex problems, escalate unresolved or critical issues with assessments and proposed solutions, and document problem-solving strategies.
  • Pursue learning and feedback, stay current with industry trends, and coach and mentor junior team members.
  • Recommend and help implement process improvements, solicit feedback, and evaluate effects on stakeholders.
  • Participate in candidate interviews, assess candidates, and provide hiring recommendations.
