About The Position

The World Bank Group is seeking a Principal/Chief Investment Officer to play a central role in shaping and scaling the organization's integrated financial solutions agenda. This role supports the WBG jobs agenda by advancing integrated financial solutions across priority sectors and in line with its three pillars: infrastructure and human capital, governance and regulatory reform, and private capital mobilization. The objective is to support senior leadership decision-making by identifying how WBG financial products can be combined more efficiently for development impact and to facilitate the standardization of successful approaches into replicable frameworks. The role combines strategic insight with strong investment judgment, influence, and project execution experience to accelerate financial innovation, private capital mobilization, and execution effectiveness. The selected candidate's title will be determined based on qualifications and experience, either Principal Investment Officer or Chief Investment Officer.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree with a minimum 12 years of relevant experience in the WBG or similar organizations.
  • Deep hands-on transaction experience in development finance, PPPs, guarantees and structured finance.
  • Knowledge of WBG reforms, IDA replenishments, Trust Fund/FIF reforms, WBG financing instruments, and financial/risk policies.
  • Knowledge of rating agency approaches and balance sheet management.
  • Strong understanding of WBG institutions and governance, including strong strategic thinking and ability to work across institutional boundaries.
  • Proven ability to operate in senior-management-facing roles.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • High energy, responsiveness, and ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Agility in addressing complex issues, often at short notice.
  • High ethical standards and discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex topics.
  • Excellent analytical and systems-level thinking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or contribute to working groups within WBG to translate complex WBG transaction execution experience into standardized, replicable integrated financial solutions with clear structuring, risk allocation, pricing, due diligence and execution parameters for combinations of IBRD/IDA loans and guarantees, IFC investments, MIGA guarantees, and private capital participation.
  • Ensure proposed integrated financial solutions systematically capture and memorialize lessons learned from past use cases to improve speed, quality, and scalability of the financial solution; liaising with relevant stakeholders as necessary.
  • Contribute to gap analysis of institutional, product, and process constraints; identify bottlenecks in due diligence, standards, approvals, structuring, and execution across WBG financial products; translate findings into actionable, management-level recommendations which can support standardized solutions.
  • Lead or contribute to the development of new financial products and platforms. Prepare concept notes, analytical papers, and decision memoranda for SLT/OLT and relevant committees as needed. Monitor uptake and scaling, identifying design, governance, or execution gaps.
  • Support strategic framing of concessionality, pricing, capital allocation, and risk appetite decisions. Prepare SLT- and OLT-ready materials translating complex issues into clear strategic choices. Support discussions on WBG balance sheet optimization, product fit and structuring, capital allocation and pricing, financial innovation and scaling pathways.
  • Operate effectively in a high-visibility, senior-management-facing role.
