Preschool Substitute Teacher
About The Position
Merryhill School is hiring a part-time Preschool Substitute Teacher to provide classroom coverage at its Danbrook Drive and Karitsa Avenue preschools in Natomas, Sacramento, based on staffing needs. The role helps establish a foundation for lifelong learning by creating a safe, nurturing, developmentally rich environment where young children can grow in curiosity, independence, and confidence. The substitute follows established lesson plans and classroom routines, using purposeful play and hands-on learning to support children. The role also involves collaboration with teachers and school leadership to maintain classroom continuity and a consistent, positive learning experience.
Requirements
- 12 semester or 18 quarter ECE units covering child development, child/family/community, and curriculum, or a bachelor’s degree in Child Development.
- Patience, compassion, and a genuine love for working with young children.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility to support different classrooms and provide coverage at both Natomas campuses.
- Ability to maintain a safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
Nice To Haves
- Child Development Associate (CDA) certification.
- Prior early childhood teaching experience.
Responsibilities
- Follow and implement age-appropriate curriculum focused on early literacy, language development, math concepts, motor skills, and social-emotional growth.
- Support a classroom culture that nurtures each child’s individuality and promotes curiosity and confidence.
- Provide a structured yet playful environment through intentional, developmentally appropriate activities.
- Supervise children during classroom activities, outdoor play, meals, rest periods, and transitions.
- Assist with toileting and other age-appropriate personal-care routines.
- Collaborate with fellow educators and school leadership to support classroom continuity and program goals.
- Communicate relevant classroom and student updates to teachers and school leadership.
- Maintain a clean, organized classroom and follow health and safety policies, licensing requirements, and school procedures.
