About The Position

The Precision Instrumentation Division Leader provides organizational leadership and second-line management for a diverse team of Technical Staff Members, Contractors, Administrative Support Personnel, and graduate and undergraduate students supporting Draper's Precision Instrumentation capability. This leader will engage engineers in solving complex technical challenges across all of Draper's business units while advancing innovation, technical excellence, and organizational growth. The Precision Instrumentation Division resides within the Sensors and Advanced Packaging Directorate of Draper's Engineering Organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required in an Engineering or technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in an Engineering and/or Program Management.
  • Including at least 5 years of experience managing individual contributors, managers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Able to solve complex problems.
  • Understanding of the program / product lifecycle in one or more of the Engineering Areas.
  • Able to drive broad organizational corrective action to improve business processes
  • Knowledge of organizational and project-based performance metrics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Self-starter and the ability to set organizational vision and achieve results.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment is a must.
  • Knowledge of industry and government regulations and certification standards (FAA, FDA, DO-178, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of talented engineers by providing clear direction, mentorship, and guidance, while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Develop and implement a division strategy (and group strategies) that support Draper’s Strategic Plan.
  • Manage personnel resources for projects staffed by the Division.
  • Manage the division’s overhead and capital budgets.
  • Develop the organization’s future leader’s careers through mentoring, growth assignments, professional seminars, and other educational opportunities.
  • Foster a learning and growth-oriented atmosphere by providing regular feedback, coaching, and development opportunities for team members.
  • Focus on building a community across the division through various, diverse streams.
  • Actively participate in recruitment efforts to attract top engineering talent, promoting diversity and inclusion within the team.
  • Effectively onboard and provide networking opportunities to new staff for long-term integration.
  • Develop innovative concepts to solve customers’ problems.
  • Develop technologies utilizing Draper’s best practices to ensure the necessary technology readiness levels.
  • Oversee the quality execution of projects led by Division staff.
  • Demonstrate strong problem solving, decision-making, delegation, and communication skills.
  • Drive the development and execution of engineering strategies that align with our overall goals and vision.
  • Develop and manage budgets, resource allocation, and project timelines to optimize team performance and deliver on strategic objectives.
  • Develop technical roadmaps for Division’s capabilities and work with IR&D Office and Business Units to capture internal and external funding to support capability development.
  • Develop methodologies and processes to enable R&D activities in a production environment.
