About The Position

The Main Pre Operative Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center serves over 25 operating rooms including Cardiovascular, Neurological, and a Level One General operating room. The space consists of 26 bays and has a volume of over 900 patients each month. This fast paced collaborative unit is a great place to work with a cohesive team. The Pre-Operative RN assesses patient/family health problems and resources, taking a leadership role in the development, implementation and outcomes evaluation of a plan for nursing care. This role provides professional nursing care and interventions to acutely ill adult patient populations, including young adults through geriatric patients, in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of their functional/developmental age. The position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of the organization, demonstrating behavior consistent with the Core Values, and supporting the organization's strategic plan and hospital-wide performance improvement plan.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, upon hire
  • Registered Nurse: AZ, upon hire
  • Basic Life Support - CPR, upon hire

  • One (1) year recent acute care experience, upon hire

Responsibilities

  • Assess patient/family health problems and resources, taking a leadership role in the development, implementation and outcomes evaluation of a plan for nursing care.
  • Provides professional nursing care and interventions to acutely ill adult patient populations.
  • Position requires providing service to one or more age groups including young adults through geriatric patients in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual served.
  • Position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of the organization.
  • It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values.
  • The employee will support the organization's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the hospital wide performance improvement plan.
  • Review the patient’s medical history and surgical clearance.
  • Perform physical assessments (e.g., vital signs, weight, allergies).
  • Evaluate patient readiness for surgery, including fasting status and medication compliance.
  • Explain the surgical procedure, anesthesia, and post-op recovery process.
  • Address patient and family concerns to reduce anxiety.
  • Communicate with surgical team members, anesthesiologists, and physicians.
  • Ensure that preoperative labs, imaging, and consents are complete and accurate.
  • Offer reassurance and support to patients and their families.
  • Help alleviate anxiety through clear communication and compassionate care.
