About The Position

The Practice Manager, Optical Sales & Development serves as the operational leader and lead optician for the practice. This role is responsible for driving optical sales performance, developing and coaching optical team members, ensuring an exceptional patient experience, and overseeing day-to-day practice operations. Unlike a traditional Practice Manager role, this position maintains a significant presence on the optical floor and functions as a working optician, directly assisting patients with eyewear selection, optical dispensing, troubleshooting, adjustments, and sales. The Practice Manager serves as the primary trainer and mentor for the optical team while partnering closely with the Clinical Manager and Optometrists to ensure seamless patient care across the practice.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3+ years of optical experience as an Optician.
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership, supervisory, or management experience.
  • Demonstrated success in optical sales and revenue generation.
  • Strong knowledge of optical products, lens technologies, frame styling, and insurance benefits.
  • Experience training, coaching, and developing team members.
  • Strong operational and business acumen.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively balance patient care, sales performance, and team leadership responsibilities.

Nice To Haves

  • ABO Certification.
  • Prior Practice Manager, Optical Manager, or Lead Optician experience.
  • Experience managing inventory, cost of goods, and optical profitability.
  • Multi-site or healthcare retail leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead optician and primary optical sales expert for the practice.
  • Educate patients on lens technologies, frame options, and eyewear solutions that meet both clinical and lifestyle needs.
  • Drive optical sales performance through consultative selling and patient education.
  • Consistently achieve and exceed optical revenue, capture rate, and sales goals.
  • Monitor key optical performance metrics and implement strategies to improve results.
  • Provide hands-on coaching and real-time development for opticians and optical staff.
  • Lead by example through exceptional patient engagement and sales execution.
  • Assist with frame styling, eyewear adjustments, repairs, troubleshooting, and optical dispensing.
  • Supervise and develop opticians, technicians, patient care coordinators, and support staff.
  • Conduct training, onboarding, performance coaching, and ongoing skill development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, patient service, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform performance evaluations and address employee concerns when necessary.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor for all team members.
  • Oversee daily practice operations to ensure efficient workflows and exceptional patient experiences.
  • Partner with the Lead OD and Clinical Manager to coordinate operations between the clinic and optical areas.
  • Monitor scheduling, staffing, productivity, and patient flow.
  • Manage inventory, frame boards, product assortment, and cost of goods.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, billing practices, and company policies.
  • Analyze business performance and identify opportunities to improve profitability and patient satisfaction.
  • Resolve patient concerns and service issues promptly and professionally.
  • Ensure a consistently high level of customer service throughout the practice.
  • Support a patient-centered culture that prioritizes quality care and positive outcomes.
  • Collaborate with providers regarding prescriptions, lens recommendations, and patient needs.
