About The Position

The Power Electronics Scientist contributes to ABB’s technology, software, product, and system development by identifying and implementing innovative solutions to relevant problems. The role involves proposing and assessing technologies for applications including power supplies, grid-connected converters, UPS systems, EV chargers, and motor drives. The scientist works independently and as part of an R&D team, developing requirements, circuit and PCB designs, firmware, simulations, and hardware demonstrators. The position is onsite in Raleigh, North Carolina, and reports to the Department Manager of Power Electronics.

Requirements

Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in the field of Power Electronics, or a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Electronics focus and at least 2 years of experience.
Hands-on experience building electrical circuits, soldering, and reworking printed circuit boards.
Ability to use oscilloscopes, probes, meters, and other basic laboratory equipment.
Experience writing firmware for DSPs, MCUs, and FPGAs using C, C++, Verilog, or VHDL.
Experience with PCB design, especially using Altium or Cadence software.
Experience with power electronics integration design, including CAD software and FEA thermal simulation software.
Ability to travel up to 15%.
Must already have work authorization permitting employment with ABB in the United States.

Responsibilities

Scout new technologies, create proposals, and obtain buy-in from sponsors.
Assess technologies for applications such as power supplies, grid-connected converters, UPS systems, EV chargers, and motor drives.
Develop technical requirements and create new designs, including electronic circuits and printed circuit boards.
Develop firmware for low- and high-level power converter functions.
Build and test simulation models and hardware demonstrators.
Select components and engage suppliers.
Build test assemblies, run experiments, and record test data.
Analyze test data and optimize solutions.
Prepare internal and external technical reports, presentations, and publications.
Write invention disclosures and provide technical input for patent filings.
Represent ABB at professional conferences and other events.
Contribute to strategic planning activities.
