Power Electronics Engineer I

JPL/NASA•Pasadena, CA
•$97,656 - $114,192•Onsite

About The Position

The Power Electronics Engineer I will support JPL’s Power Electronics Group in the design, development, fabrication, and testing of next-generation space power hardware. The role covers the full development cycle, from concepts and subsystem design through hardware fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery, with an emphasis on high-reliability flight hardware. The engineer will design and test electronics subsystems and support equipment, work hands-on with laboratory test equipment, and collaborate with cognizant and senior design engineers, systems engineers, technical group supervisors, and project managers. The Power Electronics Group develops power systems, power electronics, power sources, energy storage and conversion, and related sensor systems for research and flight applications. The group also develops power subsystem concepts, implements power system architectures and flight-project hardware, and supports proposals and project formulation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical subject area, typically with at least 1 year of related work experience; or a Master’s degree in a similar discipline with at least 0 years of related work experience.
  • Experience with bench-top test equipment, including DMMs, high-current power supplies, electronic loads, measurement probes, and oscilloscopes.
  • Ability to test and debug circuits in a laboratory, independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of and experience with computer-aided engineering software and tools for power electronics design and simulation.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the design, development, fabrication, assembly, and testing of power electronics or analog hardware, particularly power systems and analog electronics for space environments.
  • Military, aerospace, or space hardware development experience.
  • Experience with LTSpice for simulation and Altium for schematic capture and PWB layout.
  • Experience with test software and hardware, preferably using scripting languages such as Python for automation.

Responsibilities

  • Design power electronics systems, subsystems, and test equipment.
  • Coordinate fabrication of prototype and flight hardware.
  • Test prototype and flight hardware to verify correct operation and requirements, including through environmental testing.
  • Develop engineering documentation, including engineering drawings, circuit analyses, test procedures, and presentations for reviews.
  • Work with other engineers to solve technical problems during design and laboratory testing.
  • Work with section and project managers to plan and meet schedules.
  • Follow appropriate procedures and develop documentation needed to deliver high-reliability flight hardware.
