Power Electronics Engineer - 1st Shift

Dayton Phoenix Group•Dayton, OH

About The Position

Dayton-Phoenix Group is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer to design and develop high-power converters, inverters, and motor drive systems for heavy-duty mining and railroad applications. The role covers electronic and electrical aspects of new product development through production support, with an emphasis on robust, efficient, reliable solutions for harsh environments and demanding duty cycles. The engineer will work on traction drives, propulsion systems, high-voltage power electronics, and PMSM motor control, as well as prototype development, testing, and production release. The position also provides product support to customers, manufacturing, operations, field service, and Sales. It includes root-cause analysis of customer returns, corrective-action responses, technical documentation, and collaboration with engineering and technician teams to develop test cells. Travel is typically 0 to 15%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of high-power electronics design experience in transportation, heavy equipment, or industrial systems.
  • Proven expertise with inverters, motor drives, and high-voltage converters up to 3 kV DC/AC.
  • Knowledge of PMSM motors and control.
  • Familiarity with battery and hybrid energy storage systems (BESS) for heavy-duty applications.
  • Familiarity with electronic test equipment, procedures, and international standards.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office and engineering software tools.
  • Experience operating laboratory equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and critical-thinking skills, mindfulness, and accuracy.
  • Advanced computer skills and effective oral and written English communication.
  • Proficient writing skills to produce concise and accurate test plans, reports, and presentations.
  • Ability to apply knowledge to new situations, transition paper designs into physical hardware, and read, interpret, and create manufacturing or engineering documentation, test methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to direct testing accurately and summarize test results clearly.
  • Proven ability to provide leadership and ownership for product support to customers and manufacturing.
  • Initiative, excellent time management, teamwork, and ethical conduct.
  • Ability to perform the job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize high-power traction inverters (500 kW+), converters, and auxiliary power supplies for locomotives, haul trucks, and mining equipment.
  • Specify and integrate high-voltage semiconductor devices and power modules, including IGBT, SiC, IGCT, and GTO devices.
  • Develop cooling and thermal-management solutions for harsh, high-vibration environments.
  • Develop motor-drive controls for PMSM motors and embedded firmware on DSP, FPGA, or real-time controllers.
  • Develop inverter control systems for PMSM motors rated at 500 kW or more.
  • Conduct hardware testing, dynamometer validation, and field trials on locomotives and mining equipment.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable rail and mining safety standards and troubleshoot field performance issues.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and systems engineers to integrate power electronics into propulsion systems.
  • Provide technical support to operations, field service, customer engineering teams, internal and external customers, and the Sales Department.
  • Prepare technical documentation, test reports, and compliance certifications.
  • Analyze customer returns for root cause and develop corrective-action responses under the DPG quality process.
  • Support the use and application of new and legacy products.
  • Provide technical support for quotations, customer service, and special design or pricing requests.
  • Build, test, and evaluate prototypes, including specifying required instrumentation and test setups.
  • Clarify design objectives with customers as needed and communicate project updates to Sales.
  • Follow DPG release-to-production protocols and continue education to stay current with technology.
  • Work with engineers and technicians to design and build test cells for technology development.
