About The Position

The Postdoctoral Fellow will lead research efforts to connect the internal structure of mRNA lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) with key biological metrics and establish design principles that enhance their therapeutic performance. The role is in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and involves collaboration with research partners and interdisciplinary teams.

The position is expected to continue until December 31, 2027. The salary is $63,537. The role is based at the UT Main Campus and is scheduled for 40 hours per week. Work may take place around standard office conditions and chemicals, and includes repetitive keyboard use at a workstation.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field, received within the past three years.
• Demonstrated experience in small-angle scattering, soft matter characterization, and/or physical chemistry involving lipid, polymer, or biological materials.
• Ability to work well with cross-functional, interdisciplinary teams.
• Ability to lead collaborative projects and communicate results effectively in writing and presentations.

Nice To Haves

• Hands-on SAXS experience in a laboratory and/or at a synchrotron.
• Familiarity with SAXS analysis software such as BioXTAS RAW, SasView, or Irena/Nika.
• Experience with LNPs, liposomes, polymersomes, or related soft nanoparticle systems.
• Demonstrated project-management habits, active reading, conference engagement, and a publication record.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct LNP assembly and characterization in collaboration with partners.
• Perform data analysis and modeling, and develop design rules.
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
• Communicate scientific results through writing and presentations.
