About The Position

The Postdoctoral Fellow will lead research connecting the internal structure of mRNA lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) with key biological metrics and establishing design principles to enhance their therapeutic performance. The role is in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering. The position is expected to continue through December 31, 2027, and is scheduled for 40 hours per week. The work may involve standard office conditions, chemicals, and repetitive keyboard use at a workstation.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field, received within the past three years.
  • Demonstrated experience in small-angle scattering, soft matter characterization, and/or physical chemistry involving lipid, polymer, or biological materials.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional, interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to lead collaborative projects and communicate results effectively in writing and presentations.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on SAXS experience in a laboratory and/or synchrotron setting.
  • Familiarity with SAXS analysis software such as BioXTAS RAW, SasView, or Irena/Nika.
  • Experience with LNPs, liposomes, polymersomes, or related soft nanoparticle systems.
  • Demonstrated project-management habits, active reading, conference engagement, and a publication record.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research efforts connecting internal mRNA LNP structure with key biological metrics and developing design principles to enhance therapeutic performance.
