Postdoctoral Associate

University of Miami•Miami, FL

About The Position

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on validating and improving numerical model forecasts from the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS). The work will improve model physics, particularly boundary-layer and convective physics, and compare forecasts with relevant observational datasets. The associate will analyze and interpret results, present findings at scientific meetings, and publish results in scientific journals. The work will involve close collaboration with scientists in the Hurricane Research Division (HRD) at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a related field, with relevant experience in tropical cyclone simulations, model-output analysis, or observational-data analysis. Strong programming and scientific communication skills are required.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a related field.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: performing numerical simulations of tropical cyclones, analyzing tropical cyclone numerical model output, or analyzing tropical cyclone observational data.
  • Strong programming skills.
  • Strong scientific communication skills.
  • Submit a current CV, a statement of interest, and the names of three people who can provide letters of recommendation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and familiarity with analysis of tropical cyclone boundary-layer structure.
  • Familiarity with research areas commensurate with the general activities at NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division at AOML.
