About The Position

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is a major urban public research university and one of the largest employers in Chicago. This position is within the Retzky College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, specifically in the Polikanov Lab. The lab's research focuses on understanding the structure and function of bacterial ribosomes, protein synthesis, the mechanisms of action of ribosome-targeting antibiotics, and drug resistance. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research using structural, biochemical, and molecular biology techniques, including X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM, to investigate these areas. The role involves independent research, data analysis, documentation, and contributing to the dissemination of findings.

  • PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline.
  • Ability to independently design and analyze research projects, with excellent manuscript/grant writing and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and analyze experiments related to bacterial ribosome structure, function, and inhibition by small-molecule compounds.
  • Purify bacterial ribosomes and prepare additional components required for biochemical and structural studies, including recombinant proteins and tRNAs.
  • Prepare samples and complexes for structural studies using X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM.
  • Prepare culture media, buffers, solutions, and reagents according to established protocols that are necessary for the experiments.
  • Perform standard molecular biology and biochemical procedures, including recombinant protein expression and purification.
  • Analyze, interpret, document, and organize experimental data and research results.
