About The Position

The J1 Research Collaborator will conduct research aimed at elucidating the structural and molecular basis of bacterial ribosome function and its inhibition by small-molecule compounds. The research will involve a combination of structural, biochemical, and molecular biology approaches, including X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), to investigate mechanisms of protein synthesis and the action of ribosome-targeting antibiotics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of laboratory research experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or higher is preferred.
  • Practical skills with the most standard methods currently used in molecular biology, and biochemistry (such as protein expression, purification).
  • Previous experience with lab work.
  • Previous experience in structural biology (cryo-EM or X-ray crystallography) is desired.
  • Previous experience in RNA biology is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and analyze experiments related to bacterial ribosome structure, function, and inhibition by small-molecule compounds.
  • Purify bacterial ribosomes and prepare additional components required for biochemical and structural studies, including recombinant proteins and tRNAs.
  • Prepare ribosomal complexes and other biological samples for structural studies using X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM.
  • Prepare culture media, buffers, solutions, and reagents according to established protocols.
  • Perform standard molecular biology and biochemical procedures, including recombinant protein expression and purification.
  • Analyze, interpret, document, and organize experimental data and research results.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments, procedures, protocols, and results.
  • Assist with training graduate students and other laboratory personnel in research methods, proper use of laboratory equipment, and record keeping.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure that equipment and glassware are properly used, cleaned, and maintained.
  • Maintain an organized laboratory environment and follow appropriate laboratory safety and contamination-control procedures.
  • Monitor and maintain inventories of chemicals, reagents, consumables, and other laboratory supplies.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
