About The Position

This position is responsible for ensuring the quality, materials and procedures used for the production of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and related mixtures produced for incorporation in state and local agency transportation construction projects within District 5 are in accordance with contract documentation. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Portland Cement Concrete Supervisor. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS six years of engineering experience; OR eight years of engineering experience.
  • Certification in Aggregate Technician (3-day plus 2-day) or 5-day, PCC Level I.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires extensive travel within the district and occasional statewide travel.
  • Requires ability to obtain PCC Levels II and III within twelve months of hire date.
  • Requires ability to frequently lift 50 pounds and traverse a variety of terrain.
  • Requires ability to do outdoor work in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, active construction sites and roads open to traffic.
  • Requires ability to work overtime and some nighttime work as needed.
  • Requires ability to pass a pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol testing.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that all Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and related mixtures comply with department specification and special provisions.
  • Ensures proper design, proportioning, sampling, testing, and reporting of PCC mixtures used on construction projects.
  • Calibrates annually all PCC plants in the district and volumetric concrete mixer that will produce PCC mixture in the district and reviews their productions for consistency of quality and for proper functioning in general.
  • Reviews and approves contractor's quality control (QC) plans and ensures QC compliance in the field.
  • Reviews all PCC reports received by the district from construction, contractor, and local roads with Motor Fuel Tax financed construction. Ensures the accurate and timely completion of all reports and documents.
  • Ensures the proper training and certifications of all Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) personnel, local officials, producers, suppliers, consultants, contractors, and all others involved in the production and use of PCC mixtures.
  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinate personnel.
  • Instructs new hires on how to properly test concrete, log data and maintain equipment.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
