Portfolio and Trading Specialist

About The Position

Oakwell Private Wealth Management is hiring its first Portfolio and Trading Specialist for a permanently remote role. The firm’s investment strategy is set by its Investment Committee and outsourced Chief Investment Officer; this position is responsible for implementing that strategy, not selecting investments. The work will focus on approximately 50 qualifying households with significant taxable assets, concentrated or legacy positions, embedded gains, trusts, executive compensation, and customized Investment Policy Statement requirements. Working alongside advisors who own client relationships, the specialist will develop and execute household implementation strategies at the individual tax-lot level, from transitions through ongoing management. The role reviews exceptions and opportunities surfaced by portfolio-monitoring systems and applies context-sensitive judgment. The week is weighted toward household implementation, with a defined block for firmwide trade quality. The specialist will develop written, multi-year diversification plans for concentrated and low-basis positions within client capital-gains budgets, use loss harvesting, and perform tax-aware rebalancing, asset location, and allocation transitions. The role also handles transition planning and implementation for life events, reviews and reconciles firmwide trade tickets, documents and escalates errors, coordinates with providers, and partners with advisors through implementation documents and client education. Procedures, household logs, and implementation records must be documented so a successor can assume the function. Daily reconciliation has a deadline; the role specification defines priorities and coverage when workload spikes. Conservative hedging under a dedicated options procedure is a later-phase capability, not a first-year responsibility. The role reports to the Financial Planning Manager, with investment oversight from the Investment Committee. Trade authority, approval thresholds, and escalation are defined in the role specification. The ideal start date is January 2027. The hiring process begins with a 15- to 30-minute Zoom interview with the consultant/hiring manager; candidates who advance may complete a Career History Form, meet with the firm, and take assessments.

Requirements

  • Seven to ten years of experience in portfolio implementation, trading, or investment operations at a registered investment advisor, wealth manager, trust company, or asset manager.
  • Hands-on experience with rebalancing and trading platforms such as Orion Eclipse, Tamarac, iRebal, or similar, and major custodial platforms.
  • Working fluency in tax-lot accounting, wash-sale rules, capital-gains management, and tax-aware trading mechanics.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, or a related field.
  • Series 65 or investment adviser representative registration.
  • Documented-process mindset that prioritizes accuracy, fairness, and efficiency over speed, with the discipline to escalate rather than improvise.
  • Employment is subject to the firm’s Code of Ethics, personal trading pre-clearance, outside business activity disclosure, and a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Schwab and Fidelity custodial platforms; these are strongly preferred.
  • CFA, CIMA, or CFP designation; not required.
  • Experience hedging concentrated positions with covered calls, protective puts, or collars; valued and relevant to a later-phase capability rather than a first-year duty.

Responsibilities

  • Build and execute household implementation strategies from transition through ongoing management, working at the individual tax-lot level.
  • Create written, multi-year diversification plans for concentrated and low-basis positions within each client’s capital-gains budget, paired with loss harvesting.
  • Conduct systematic tax-loss harvesting with household-wide wash-sale tracking.
  • Perform tax-aware rebalancing within defined bands, asset location across taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts, and multi-year tax-budgeted allocation transitions.
  • Prepare tax-aware transition plans before assets move and implementation plans for events such as a business sale, inheritance, retirement income, or a large withdrawal.
  • Review and reconcile trade tickets across firm accounts on a cadence established through capacity validation and phased in as household implementation stabilizes.
  • Document and escalate errors and exceptions, and coordinate with providers.
  • Prepare implementation strategy documents and plain-language education support for qualifying households; proactively brief advisors about relevant milestones, risks, and opportunities.
  • Create and maintain procedures, household logs, and implementation records to a standard that enables a successor to assume the role.
  • Review portfolio-monitoring exceptions and opportunities using judgment about household circumstances.
  • Follow the role specification’s priorities and coverage procedures when workload spikes.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $90,000–$120,000.
  • Quarterly bonus plan tied to implementation quality and firm performance.
  • Firm pays 75% of the employee’s health-care cost.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Twenty days of paid time off plus additional firm holidays.
  • Cross-trained backup coverage to support time away and the firm’s two-week continuity standard.
  • Permanently remote position.
