About The Position

Pool Guard I employees oversee pool patron safety by monitoring pool and deck areas to prevent accidents. They explain and enforce facility regulations, policies, and procedures; rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning; administer first aid and CPR as needed; receive patron fees; assist with aquatic class and activity registration; maintain records and prepare reports; perform maintenance tasks; and carry out other assigned duties. Employees are primarily employed part time and may be scheduled to work holidays, weekends, and evenings. They must be available to work as scheduled from June through August without vacation leave. Employees must wear standard apparel prescribed by the Park and Recreation Department, maintain current required certifications, and periodically pass a performance test to retain employment. TB testing is required upon hire and every four years thereafter. Applicants must apply before taking the pass/fail performance test. Approved applicants will be notified of the test date, time, and location. Test dates are tentatively planned for December 2026, March 2027, and June 2027, with the first test scheduled for December 12, 2026. The test includes a 300-yard swim, two minutes of leg-only treading water, and an object-retrieval event that must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds. A candidate who fails any part may take one retest on the same test date, and may reapply 30 days after the most recent test date. Candidates who pass are placed on a list used to fill vacancies for the following 180 days; the department may contact candidates with the most appropriate qualifications for interviews. Employment offers are conditional on successful completion of applicable screening, which may include verification of the right to work in the United States, a medical review and exam (potentially including drug and alcohol testing), reference checks, and fingerprinting. Additional screening may apply to certain positions.
