Police Service Representatives are civilian employees of the Los Angeles Police Department assigned to Communications Division. They use multiple screens, radio frequencies, and a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to receive and differentiate 911 and non-emergency calls from the public, dispatch police patrol cars to calls for service, critical incidents, and emergencies, access law enforcement databases, and provide support information to police officers. The initial assignment is a temporary training position limited to twelve months. Employees must successfully complete a comprehensive training program. Upon successful completion, they receive regular appointments to the Police Service Representative class and begin a six-month probationary period in Communications Division. The examination consists of a qualifying computerized CritiCall test and a qualifying interview. The CritiCall test measures verbal skill, reasoning, memory, perceptual ability, and multitasking. The interview evaluates personal and professional qualifications, including judgment, attention to detail, stress tolerance, customer service, flexibility, oral communication, and listening. Candidates who receive conditional offers must pass a comprehensive medical examination; a psychological evaluation may be included when needed. The position may also be subject to mandatory drug and alcohol screening.
