The Beaverton Police Department is accepting applications for volunteer Reserve Officers. The Reserve Unit is a team of volunteer officers who donate their time to the city and the community in a variety of roles. The unit consists of a maximum of 20 members who receive initial training by attending an internal reserve academy for 3 months. The academy is taught by members of the Beaverton Police Department. After graduating, reserve officers receive ongoing training by attending all regular department-mandated training, as well as reserve officer-specific classes twice a month. Reserve officers typically spend an average of 20 hours per month performing a wide variety of duties. They work with full-time officers in two-person cars, facilitating responses to calls for service and transporting prisoners during busy periods, which frees up full-time officers to provide other services and activities in the community. While working side-by-side with Beaverton Police Department officers, reserve officers receive direct training utilizing a modified version of the Field Training and Evaluation Program used to train the department’s full-time officers. The selection process involves submitting an application via the City of Beaverton’s online portal, followed by a written exam, physical test, oral boards, and a rigorous background examination. Offers to join the next Reserve Recruit Academy are contingent upon passing a medical exam, drug screen, and psychological evaluation.
