About The Position

Acts as a non-sworn officer to assist and augment the police department staff with security, crowd control, general safety patrol, and transport duties. Reserve Officers assist with City Park patrols, traffic direction, parades, special events, athletic events, etc. Reserve Police duties are filled on a volunteer basis. When events occur that require a reserve, the duty is posted, and reserves are allowed to volunteer for the duties that they can work. Most recent duties include High School Football games, patrolling City Parks. Posting closes June 22nd. Reference checks June 22nd-June 28th. Interviews week of July 6th. All dates tentative.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Satisfactory background investigation report is required
  • Knowledge of Law enforcement principles, practices, and methods.
  • Thorough understanding of City’s functions, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong written and oral communications and relational skills.
  • Ability to follow and relay complex oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Comfortable speaking to groups.
  • Attention to details.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse group of associates and the community.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Provides security for school events: Attends school functions to maintain peace and safety. Functions include sporting events, dances, and academic events.
  • May assist with the transport of juveniles as required.
  • Assists Patrol Officers with the patrol of business and residential areas of the City of Red Wing on foot or in vehicle during large or seasonal events.
  • Patrol parks and cemeteries as needed in the summer months.
  • Provides crowd control and traffic control for parades and summer festivals.
  • Patrols downtown area to ensure safety and security during times when crowds are large (i.e. Christmas season).
  • May provide First Responder assistance to the general public as needed.
  • May post roadways with appropriate signage for specific and special City events.
  • May provide assistance to emergency scenes (i.e. crime, motor vehicle and natural disasters, etc.)
  • Assists sworn personnel with transport duty.
  • Rides with sworn staff as needed to transport subjects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Attends training as mandated.
