About The Position

Employees will safeguard lives and property by enforcing applicable laws, regulations and promote good university and community relations. This position involves patrolling buildings, grounds, parking lots, off-campus facilities, and city streets in the vicinity of the campus. The role includes providing general assistance, conducting investigations, protecting crime scenes, collecting evidence, enforcing traffic laws, and responding to emergency situations. Additionally, officers are responsible for reporting and documentation, conducting interviews and interrogations, performing searches and seizures, arresting and detaining individuals, and providing services to the university community.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • No record of conviction of a felony or misdemeanors as identified in the Illinois Police Training Act, or a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Eligibility for bonding, if required.
  • Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers’ Training course (or requirement to complete during probationary period).
  • Successful completion of the Law Enforcement Officers’ Certification Examination (if applicable).
  • At least 21 years of age upon employment.
  • Must have taken and passed the Joliet Junior College POWER Test, Triton College's POWER Test, NIPSTA POWER Test, or Southwestern Illinois College Police Academy (SWIC) POWER Test within the past 6 months, evidenced by a POWER Test card.
  • Mandated firearm training course must be completed during the probationary period (if not already completed).

Nice To Haves

  • Persons who have not successfully completed the mandated firearm training course, as approved and recognized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, must complete the course during their probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol buildings, grounds, parking lots, off-campus facilities, and city streets via foot and vehicle.
  • Provide general assistance to faculty, staff, students, visitors, and the neighboring community.
  • Promote Problem Solving/Community Oriented Policing philosophy.
  • Advise community members on crime prevention strategies.
  • Detect hazardous conditions.
  • Conduct initial and follow-up investigations of crimes and events.
  • Locate and interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Generate and pursue investigative leads.
  • Review reports, documents, and files to evaluate criminal activity.
  • Document evidentiary facts, occurrences, and activities.
  • Work with the State's Attorney's office.
  • Serve criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas.
  • Exercise lawful use of arrest, force, search, and seizure powers.
  • Appear in court for testimony.
  • Work with juvenile officers.
  • Coordinate with state and local police agencies.
  • Protect crime scenes and collect evidence and information.
  • Identify and preserve crime scenes.
  • Conduct initial interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Identify, collect, and evaluate evidence.
  • Recover and inventory stolen, confiscated, and recovered property.
  • Tag evidence and confiscated property.
  • Transport and record physical evidence, safeguarding the chain of evidence.
  • Enforce traffic laws and conduct traffic investigations.
  • Investigate suspicious vehicles.
  • Determine probable cause for traffic stops.
  • Stop vehicles to cite, warn, or arrest occupants.
  • Execute felony motor stops.
  • Check registration for wants and warrants.
  • Complete citations and bond sheets.
  • Investigate hit-and-run violations.
  • Investigate traffic accident scenes.
  • Collect physical evidence from accident scenes.
  • Complete Illinois Traffic Crash Reports.
  • Protect traffic accident scenes.
  • Complete all necessary reports in a timely manner, including initial offense/incident reports, arrest reports, and criminal investigation reports.
  • Record confessions, witness statements, and other accounts in writing.
  • Complete arrest and complaint forms.
  • Interrogate adult suspects.
  • Interview complainants and witnesses.
  • Interview informants.
  • Observe verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Conduct field searches of arrested persons.
  • Conduct frisks or pat-downs.
  • Search automobiles under independent probable cause.
  • Search premises/property incident to arrest, in hot pursuit/emergency situations, with consent, or with a warrant.
  • Seize contraband.
  • Advise persons of constitutional rights (Miranda Warning).
  • Arrest persons with or without a warrant.
  • Conduct temporary detention of suspicious persons (stop and frisk).
  • Obtain arrest warrants.
  • Control hostile groups.
  • Use devices to control or take down suspects.
  • Subdue physically attacking persons.
  • Use weaponless defense tactics.
  • Disarm violent armed suspects.
  • Subdue persons resisting arrest.
  • Operate vehicles to transport prisoners.
  • Search vehicles for weapons and/or contraband.
  • Respond to service requests.
  • Lock and unlock doors.
  • Provide money escorts and personal escorts.
  • Perform fingerprinting.
  • Provide motorist assistance.
  • Provide medical assistance.
  • Issue emergency notifications.
  • Secure accident and disaster scenes.
  • Apply National Incident Management System concepts during emergency response.
  • Assume role of Incident Commander during emergency response.
  • Assist in the evacuation of occupants during emergencies and fire drills.
  • Administer first aid and CPR.
  • Assist individuals with disabilities.
  • Provide leadership and training to new/temporary officers.
  • Provide specialized training to fellow officers.
  • Act as officer in charge of patrol in the absence of a ranking supervisor.
  • Request and maintain department-issued equipment and gear.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
