About The Position

A Police Lieutenant directly supervises subordinate sworn and civilian police employees and carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).
  • 5 years of accredited service with the Dayton Police Department.
  • 2 years MUST be in the rank of Police Sergeant immediately prior to the date of this promotional examination.
  • Must be OPOTA certified at time of appointment and maintain thereafter.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter.
  • Must currently hold the rank of Police Sergeant with the Dayton Police Department.
  • Must have 2 years of consecutive service in the rank of Police Sergeant immediately prior to the date of this promotional examination.
  • Must have 5 years of accredited service in the Dayton Police Department as of the examination date.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants wishing to receive educational credit must provide documentation of their education to the Director and Chief of Police or their designee by the examination date, October 1, 2026.
  • Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
