Platform Architect

Serverfarm•Remote, TX, TX

About The Position

Serverfarm is seeking a hands-on Platform Architect to define and build the foundation of the next InCommand, a new API-first platform for operating modern data centers, including high-density and AI infrastructure. The product will be delivered as a cloud service and deployable in customer environments. Serverfarm’s own facilities will be the first customers, so the platform will be tested in live operations. The architect will design the platform’s data model and architecture, write foundational production code using AI-assisted tools, and set technical direction for the engineers who join the team. The role partners closely with Product Management, Integrations, and Developer Platform.

Requirements

  • 10+ years building back-end and platform systems.
  • Within the last three years, personally shipped a multi-tenant SaaS platform or control plane on Kubernetes as the technical decision-maker, writing production code.
  • Designed the domain data model for a complex operational system involving assets, hierarchies, time series, and events, and owned its evolution across releases, including compatibility, versioning, and migration decisions.
  • Delivered retrieval performance at telemetry scale, selecting time-series and relational storage (such as PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB or equivalent) and a columnar engine (such as ClickHouse) for analytical and AI workloads; designed queries for live and analytical workloads over long histories and met API latency targets.
  • Hands-on experience building on a major public cloud (GCP, AWS, or Azure) with Kubernetes and Helm, and judgment about managed services versus portability.
  • Built identity, tenancy, and security into enterprise SaaS by design.
  • Designed and published an API or data-model specification used by other teams and ideally external organizations, and written architecture decisions that engineers worked from.
  • Served as a senior individual contributor on foundational production code for a platform.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using agentic coding tools and directing and reviewing agent-written code at volume.
  • Knowledge of or experience with DCIM products, the data they manage, and how data-center operators use them.
  • Designed platform ingress with Kafka-compatible streaming (Kafka, Redpanda, or equivalent) and MQTT brokers (EMQX, HiveMQ, or equivalent).
  • Instrumented a platform with OpenTelemetry for its own observability.
  • Integrated large language models into a platform, including a model gateway, retrieval over operational data, and tool interfaces an assistant can call.
  • Run a platform across public clouds or shipped software both as a cloud service and in customer-hosted or air-gapped environments.

Responsibilities

  • Build the new platform’s control plane and tenancy foundation, writing the first code with coding agents and engineers joining the team.
  • Design and own the unified data model and its evolution; publish it with the public API as a specification for others to build against.
  • Define platform architecture, including data stores, identity and multi-tenancy, and the API layer.
  • Own retrieval and query performance at telemetry scale, including storage choices, query patterns for live consoles and analytical and AI workloads, latency targets, and tenant isolation at the data layer.
  • Choose the technology stack and platform standards; recommend the initial cloud and how the platform will remain portable.
  • Design integration of large language models and other AI services for operational insights, recommendations, and natural-language access to operational data.
  • Partner with Integrations to define the contract by which site data enters the platform.
  • Give technical direction to engineers joining the platform and establish the patterns the team will use.

Benefits

  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • 401k
  • Full coverage medical, dental, and vision
  • Bonus as part of the compensation package
