About The Position

The University at Albany is hiring a Plant Utilities Engineer 1 for its Power Plant. The position is classified as contingent permanent and is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). During the NY HELPS program, the position may be filled through a non-competitive appointment without an examination, provided the applicant meets the title’s minimum qualifications. The posting states that employees hired through NY HELPS are expected to convert to competitive status within one year of permanent appointment, without taking an examination.

The role requires a valid New York State driver’s license, the ability to perform manual labor, the ability to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime, and the ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, with Sunday and Monday as pass days. The salary is $59,049 at Grade SG-14 (CSEA).

Requirements

• Meet at least one of the listed minimum qualification pathways: qualifying U.S. military training or service; qualifying Merchant Marine credentials and experience; completion of a qualifying apprenticeship or technical certificate program; a specified engineering bachelor’s degree; qualifying hands-on HVAC, boiler, facility, or auxiliary-equipment experience; or the stated combinations of an HVAC associate’s degree or approved certificate with qualifying experience.

• For the non-NY HELPS competitive appointment pathway, have a reachable score on the University at Albany Plant Utilities Engineer 1 Exam List, be an eligible current NYS employee with a permanent appointment and one year of service in the specified title or a transferable title, or be eligible for reinstatement to Plant Utilities Engineer 1.
