About The Position

This is a career ladder position with multiple levels (I, II, III) responsible for the installation and repair of sewer lines, manholes, sewer line cleaning, sewer crossings, inverted siphons, and other sewer components that transport sewer from homes and businesses to treatment plants. All levels are considered essential positions, requiring availability for emergency calls. These are manual labor-intensive roles requiring work outdoors in all weather conditions, with significant overtime expected. Punctuality and attendance are necessary. Safety is a primary value, with employees expected to strictly follow safety policies, promptly correct or report hazards, and immediately report injuries. On-the-job training and support are available, with opportunities for promotion to higher levels within the pipefitter series or to Water/Sewer Foreperson.

Requirements

Valid Texas C class Driver's License (Pipefitter I & II).
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Pipefitter III).
High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
One year of experience in water work, utilities, or another related field (Pipefitter II).
Two years of experience in sewer work, utilities, or another related field (Pipefitter III).
Demonstrate knowledge of pipefitting tools and processes (Pipefitter II & III).
Complete Competent Person training (Pipefitter II & III).
Traffic Control Training Course (Pipefitter III).
Complete the OSHA 10 Course (Pipefitter III).
Employee must have a rating of “good or better” on previous performance appraisal (Pipefitter II & III).
Ability to perform preventative maintenance to equipment, such as backhoe, 2.5-ton truck with trailer, air compressor, water pumps, jackhammers, air tamps, pipe cutter, portable generator, drills, various hand tools, and shoring equipment.
Fundamental knowledge of hand tools.
Ability to read and understand maps and use location equipment.
Knowledge of safety equipment is necessary to perform job duties.
Ability to work in heavy traffic areas.
Must be able to see and hear to an acceptable level for safety.
Ability to work around environmental factors such as inclement weather, insects, spiders, snakes, and wildlife.
Work in an environment where raw sewage is present.
Must be willing and able to perform work where hazardous atmosphere is present.
Must be able to work cooperatively in a team setting to accomplish common goals.
Must have the ability to work significant amounts of overtime including weekends and holidays.

Nice To Haves

Preferred experience in water works, utilities, or another related field (Pipefitter I).
Learn excavation techniques to expose sewer systems in need of repair (Pipefitter I).
Attend trenching and shoring training (Pipefitter I).
Learn operation techniques for light to heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, skid loaders, and mini excavators (Pipefitter I).
Obtain a class A driver’s license (Pipefitter I).
Obtain a Class 1 TCEQ Wastewater Collection Operator License (Pipefitter II).
Complete OSHA 10 training course (Pipefitter II).
Complete traffic control training courses (Pipefitter II).
Obtain a Class 1 TCEQ Wastewater Collection Operator License within one year of hire (Pipefitter III).
Possess a Class A Driver’s License or be able to obtain within one year of hire (Pipefitter III).
Obtain a Class 2 TCEQ Wastewater Collection Operator License (Pipefitter III).
Complete OSHA 30 training course (Pipefitter III).

Responsibilities

Repair and replace damaged sewer lines, sewer manholes, sewer crossings, inverted siphons, and other sewer components.
Perform internal inspection of sewer pipelines detecting internal leaks and pipe damage.
Clean sewer lines using rodding machine or high pressure jetted machine to clear obstructions needed to restore proper sewer flow.
Perform daily inspection of assigned vehicles, trailers, and other equipment.
Work in trenches and follow all trench shoring procedures and understand the associated hazards.
Work in confined areas (streets, alleys, easements, etc.) to install and maintain sewer services.
Perform confined space entry to make necessary repairs when needed.
Excavate sewer systems in need of repair by operating heavy equipment, ensuring no interruption of services or damage to infrastructure.
Operate light to heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, skid loaders, and mini excavators.
Work safely in traffic and set up traffic control according to the Texas MUTCD.
Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, including the proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment.
Participate in on-call rotations to quickly resolve after-hours service disruptions.
Read, interpret, and understand maps and drawings.
Learn and operate the Cartegraph Asset Management system, inputting tasks, work orders, labor costs, attachments, requests, etc.
Represent the City of Amarillo in a positive manner when working around customers and performing duties.
Supervise lower-level employees and assume the duties of a Foreperson in their absence (Pipefitter III only).
Assist in on-the-job training for new employees (Pipefitter II and III).
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
