About The Position

The Pipefitter positions (I, II, and III) are responsible for the installation and repair of water lines, service lines, isolation valves, water taps, water meter boxes, fire hydrants, and other water components within the Water Distribution business unit. These roles are considered essential and require availability for emergency calls. The positions involve manual labor and require working outdoors in all weather conditions, with significant overtime expected. Punctuality and attendance are necessary. These are career ladder positions with opportunities for promotion and on-the-job training and support. Safety is a primary value, and employees are expected to strictly follow safety policies, promptly report hazards, and make suggestions for safety improvements.

Requirements

Valid Texas C class Driver's License (Pipefitter I & II)
Valid Commercial Driver's License (Pipefitter III)
High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
One year of experience in water work, utilities, or another related field (Pipefitter II)
Two years of experience in water work, utilities, or another related field (Pipefitter III)
Demonstrate knowledge of pipefitting tools and processes (Pipefitter II & III)
Complete Competent Person training (Pipefitter II & III)
Complete the OSHA 10 Course (Pipefitter III)
Traffic Control Training Course (Pipefitter III)
Employee must have a rating of “good or better” on previous performance appraisal (Pipefitter II & III)
Ability to perform preventative maintenance to equipment, such as backhoe, 2.5-ton truck with trailer, air compressor, water pumps, jackhammers, air tamps, pipe cutter, portable generator, tap machine, drills, various hand tools, and shoring equipment.
Fundamental knowledge of hand tools.
Ability to read and understand maps and use location equipment.
Knowledge of safety equipment is necessary to perform job duties.
Ability to work in heavy traffic areas.
Ability to see and hear to an acceptable level for safety.
Ability to work around environmental factors such as inclement weather, insects, spiders, snakes, and wildlife.
Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting to accomplish common goals.
Ability to work significant amounts of overtime including weekends and holidays.
Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ability to balance, crouch, feel, finger, handle, pull, push, reach, speak, stand, stoop, talk, see, and walk.
Ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions.

Responsibilities

Assist in the repair and replacement of damaged water lines, service lines, isolation valves, water taps, water meter boxes, fire hydrants, and other water components.
Understand and perform the function of exercising valves throughout the water distribution system.
Perform daily inspection of assigned vehicles, trailers, and other equipment.
Work in confined areas (streets, alleys, easements, etc.) to install and maintain water services.
Work in trenches and follow all trench shoring procedures and understand the hazards associated with trenching and shoring.
Perform manual labor in the completion of duties as assigned.
Excavate water systems in need of repair by operating heavy equipment.
Operate light to heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, skid loaders, and mini excavators.
Participate in on-call rotations to quickly resolve after-hours service disruptions.
Read, interpret, and understand maps and drawings.
Assist in on-the-job training for new employees.
Work safely in traffic and set up traffic control according to the Texas MUTCD.
Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, including the proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment.
Represent the City of Amarillo in a positive manner when working around customers and while performing all duties.
Supervise lower-level employees and assume the duties of a Foreperson in their absence (Pipefitter III only).
Obtain and maintain a Class C TCEQ Water Operator License within one year of hire (Pipefitter III).
Possess a Class A Driver’s License or be able to obtain within one year of hire (Pipefitter III).
Demonstrate proficiency working with the Cartegraph Asset Management system (Pipefitter III).
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
