About The Position

The Department of Surgery/Orthopedics at the V.A. Boston Healthcare System (VABHCS), affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH)/Harvard Medical School (HMS), and Boston University (BU), is seeking an orthopedic surgeon. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). The ideal candidate will have experience and practice in joint arthroplasty, shoulder and upper extremity surgery, an outstanding clinical and academic track record, and an interest in educating residents and fellows. Candidates will be selected based on experience, leadership, and skills, and will be eligible for appointment as an Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor at HMS or BU.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation/examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Must be selected for a testing designated position and be subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements.
  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must meet physical standards for the position.
  • Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling.
  • Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
  • Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors.
  • Hearing aid is permitted.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and practice in joint arthroplasty, shoulder and upper extremity surgery are required.
  • Accredited fellowship training in joint arthroplasty; upper extremity training preferred.
  • Demonstrate excellence in clinical care, teaching, and academic productivity.
  • Credentials suitable for appointment at HMS or BU at the Instructor, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor level.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive orthopedic surgical care with emphasis on joint arthroplasty.
  • Perform operative and non-operative management including evaluation, surgery, and follow-up.
  • Participate in the education of residents and fellows.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary teamwork and quality improvement efforts.
  • Engage in academic activity including teaching and scholarly work.
