About The Position

This role places a physician assistant at the center of patient outcomes in orthopedic care, managing the patient journey from the first consult through the operating room and back to full function. The physician assistant will extend the surgeon’s judgment, streamline the path from diagnosis to recovery, and ensure every patient visit is impactful.

Requirements

  • NCCPA-certified PA with an active state license and DEA where prescribing is in scope.
  • Prior orthopedic, surgical, or acute musculoskeletal experience with demonstrated first-assist or procedural skill.
  • Ability to conduct efficient clinic visits and produce a decision-ready plan.
  • Comfortable in the OR, possessing knowledge of sterile technique, anatomy, and calm communication under pressure.
  • Ability to provide clear written and spoken explanations for patients, including support for informed consent.
  • Working knowledge of orthopedic coding and documentation standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in joints, sports, trauma, and fracture care.
  • Familiarity with EMR templates and implant preference cards.
  • Experience working with a dedicated MA or nurse for rooming and follow-up.

Responsibilities

  • Own the clinic workflow for a defined panel, including completing history, exam, imaging review, and formulating a clear surgical or nonoperative plan before the surgeon's entry.
  • First-assist in orthopedic procedures, demonstrating reliable exposure, closure, and instrument anticipation to ensure cases start and finish on time without avoidable delay.
  • Reduce post-operative complications by standardizing discharge instructions, DVT prophylaxis, and wound checks, and by escalating red flags the same day.
  • Close the loop on results (imaging, labs, and consults) within one business day, communicating changes and next steps to patients.
  • Minimize documentation rework so operative notes, orders, and coding accurately support delivered care and withstand audit.
  • Coach patients through realistic recovery milestones, ensuring return-to-work and return-to-sport plans are specific, timed, and followed.
  • Identify and propose one process improvement per quarter (e.g., scheduling, implant readiness, discharge) to shorten cycle time without compromising safety.

Benefits

  • Defined call expectations.
  • Protected time for dictation.
  • Clear pathway for PA privileging, first-assist credentialing, and DEA.
  • EMR templates.
  • Implant preference cards.
  • Dedicated MA or nurse for rooming and follow-up.
