Physician Assistant - PICU (BCH-Mission Bay/Oakland)
About The Position
UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital is a world-renowned leader in healthcare, recognized for innovation, technology, and compassionate care. It is ranked among the top children's hospitals nationally by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital features 183 beds and over 150 specialists across more than 40 medical areas. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides advanced, high-level care for children requiring continuous monitoring, with 20 beds for infants and children with various conditions or recovering from surgery. Annually, over 1,000 children are admitted to the intensive care units, arriving from across the western United States. The Pediatric Transitional Care Unit (TCUP) is an 18-bed unit caring for infants and children with diverse conditions or recovering from surgery. TCUP manages patients with moderate to high disease complexity, including those recovering from solid organ transplantation, requiring anticoagulant therapy titration, post-specialty surgery care (ENT, neurosurgery), and respiratory support (BIPAP, CPAP, high flow nasal cannula, mechanical ventilation with tracheostomy). The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be an integral team member, collaborating with attending physicians, fellows, and residents to ensure safe patient care delivery. This role involves meeting productivity expectations set by the Division Chief and performing all duties related to patient care activities as appropriate and clearly defined. APPs on the PICU and TCUP Team work rotating 12-hour shifts.
Requirements
- Graduation from a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the PA (ARC-PA).
- Minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience in Pediatric Critical Care unit (for Physician Assistant role).
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in a Pediatric Critical Care unit (for Sr. Physician Assistant role).
- California Physician Assistant (PA) License without restriction.
- National Board Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- California Driver License (if required for position).
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address.
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Additional required AHA certifications: PALS.
- UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in inpatient and outpatient settings. Credentialing takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Responsibilities
- Independently or collaboratively evaluates and manages patients, including taking histories, performing physical examinations, responding to changes in patient status, performing consults, and ordering/furnishing medications, diagnostic tests, treatments, therapies, consultations, referrals, durable medical equipment (DME), and home health services.
- Documents care in the electronic medical record according to UCSF Rules and Regulations and complies with APP Billing Policy 3.08.01.
- Responds to clinical documentation integrity inquiries within 3 days.
- Performs procedures granted via privileges/standardized procedures.
- Identifies patients with acute decompensation or failure, responds to the hospital plan of care, and reviews with a physician.
- Initiates consultations as indicated.
- Documents independent assessment findings and recommends appropriate treatments.
- Participates in service rounds and patient evaluation and treatment planning.
- Reviews lab tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic tests, and initiates appropriate team plans.
- Evaluates complex cases and establishes individualized plans of care for disposition to a lower level of care.
- Interprets and acts upon completed tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
- Completes clinically relevant paperwork/EHR documentation, including ordering medications, completing episodic care notes, and discharge summaries.
- Effectively communicates findings, treatment options, and care plans with patients and their families.
- May first assist in the operating room if privileged through OMAG after completing required certification and proctoring.
- Monitors and evaluates patients for discharge, setting parameters and guidelines for continuum of care with the multi-disciplinary team, including evaluating and defining the discharge regimen.
- Discharges patients, including prescribing/furnishing medications, ordering DME, recommending/referring for ongoing follow-up care, providing discharge teaching, and completing discharge summaries.
- Coordinates care throughout the continuum, including hospital admission, care coordination with staff and consulting services, and hospital discharge planning.
- Coordinates episodic care and determines timing of routine clinic follow-up.
- Participates in huddles with clinic/hospital staff and anticipates patients requiring close management or intervention.
- Consults with nursing staff on the plan and implementation of individualized nursing care plans.
- Independently provides case summaries for disability, insurance agencies, workers' compensation, work releases, and medical supply agencies.
- Formulates and implements protocols to improve quality and efficiency and control waste in the clinical specialty.
