About The Position

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals are consistently ranked among the nation's best children's hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. We have two main campuses serving children and their families, one in Oakland and one in San Francisco, as well as satellite locations throughout Northern California. Our dynamic, highly skilled Pediatric Trauma Surgery APP team provides comprehensive care for patients with all pediatric general surgical conditions and traumatic injuries. We value individuals who are professional with strong interpersonal and communication skills and able to prioritize and adapt to changing situations. Our pediatric surgery APPs manage patients collaboratively with the Pediatric Surgery service team including residents, fellows, and attendings. The Physician Assistant will act as a full member of the team taking responsibility for the safe delivery of care in collaboration with attending physicians, fellows and residents. This team member will meet productivity expectations as set forth by the Division Chief, performing any duties related to patient care activities that are appropriate and clearly delineated. Advanced Practice Providers on the Pediatric Trauma Surgery Team provide care in rotating 12h shifts. Minimum Availability Requirements: This per diem position includes holidays and weekends with the following minimum availability requirements: Four (4) shifts per eight (8) week schedule or ratio of 2 shifts per 4 weeks scheduled. Weekend/Night Commitment: Must be available and willing to work at least 4 weekend (Saturday or Sunday) or 4 night shifts, if applicable, per 8-week schedule. Holiday Commitment: Must be available to work one major UCSF holiday and one non-Major UCSF holiday per year (includes the holiday and the day before or after for a 2-day holiday period): Major UCSF Holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th or Labor Day Non-Major UCSF Holidays: MLK Jr. Day, President’s Day, Juneteenth, Mother’s Day, Halloween May be scheduled for the holiday in addition to the day before or day after the holiday Expect inpatient clinical service to occur at UCSF BCH Oakland, primarily, but may be expected to provide care in San Francisco as well.

Requirements

Graduation from a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the PA (ARC-PA).
Physician Assistant Per Diem: Minimum of three (3 years) of inpatient clinical experience as a PA in Pediatric Surgery.
California Physician Assistant (PA) License without restriction
National Board Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
California Driver License (if required for position)
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Additional required AHA certifications: PALS
Additional required certifications (such as ENLS): Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) must be obtained within 6 months of hire or as soon as feasibly available.
UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. Credentialing takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Responsibilities

Independently (independent APP encounter) or collaboratively (shared physician and APP encounter) evaluates and manages patients. Includes taking histories, performing physical examinations, responding to changes in patient status, performing consults, ordering or furnishing medications/diagnostic tests/treatments/therapies/consultations/referrals/durable medical equipment (DME)/home health services. Care provided must be documented in the electronic medical record in accordance with the UCSF Rules and Regulations. Provider services must be billed to reflect the performing provider and comply with the APP Billing Policy 3.08.01. APPs must respond to clinical documentation integrity inquiries from the Department of Quality and Patient Safety within 3 days.
Performs procedures granted to them via privileges/standardized procedures.
Identifies patients with acute decompensation or failure and responds to the hospital plan of care and reviews with physician.
Initiates consultations as indicated.
Documents independent assessment findings and recommends appropriate treatments.
Participates in service rounds and patient evaluation and treatment planning.
Reviews lab tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic tests, and initiates appropriate team plans.
Evaluates complex cases, establishes individualized plans of care for disposition to a lower level of care.
Interprets and acts upon completed tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
Completes clinically relevant paperwork/electronic health record (EHR) documentation, including but not limited to ordering medications, completing episodic care notes and discharge summaries in accordance with the UCSF Rules and Regulations.
Effectively communicates findings, treatment options, and care plans with patients and their families.
May first assist in the operating room if privileged to do so through OMAG after completing the required certification and proctoring.
Monitors and evaluates patients for discharge. Sets parameters and guidelines for continuum of care with multi-disciplinary team. This includes evaluating and defining discharge regimen.
Discharges patients including prescribing/furnishing medications, ordering DME, and recommending or referring for ongoing follow up care, providing discharge teaching, and completing discharge summaries.
Coordinates care throughout the continuum including hospital admission, care coordination with staff and consulting services, and hospital discharge planning.
Coordinates episodic care and determines timing of routine clinic follow up.
Participates in huddles with clinic/hospital staff and anticipates patients who require close management or intervention.
Consults with nursing staff on plan and implementation of individualized nursing care plans.
Independently provides case summaries for disability, insurance agencies, workers compensation, work releases, and medical supply agencies.
Formulates and implements protocols to improve quality and efficiency and control waste in the clinical specialty.
