About The Position

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Regions Hospital is seeking a full-time Physician Assistant. Being a part of our team means you will have an impact on the care that our patients receive every day. Primary duties include first assist in adult cardiac and thoracic as well as robotic procedures, partnering in perioperative and postoperative care, inpatient rounding, call coverage, and clinic as needed. Currently, call responsibility is 1 in 4, on average. Specifically, in the operating room, the CV-PA will be responsible for positioning of the patient, endoscopic vein harvest, first assisting the surgeon at the chest, wound closure and assisting with safe transport to the ICU. The position requires a current unrestricted medical license as a Physician Assistant. 1-2 years of experience preferred in the cardiovascular surgery (OR) environment which includes First Assisting and/or vein harvesting. Requirements

  • Current unrestricted medical license as a Physician Assistant
  • Completion of and certification in an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the State of Minnesota
  • NCCPA certified
  • Ability to perform as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with peers, students and other health care personnel
  • Ability to work dependently and independently
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and prioritizes appropriately
  • Knowledge of personal computers and appropriate software.
  • Ability to access and analyze pertinent information in order to make care decisions
  • Ability to First and Second assist (harvest veins)

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • First assist in adult cardiac and thoracic as well as robotic procedures

  • Coordinates the management of care with the Surgeon, Fellow, CV Clinicians and nursing staff for CV surgical patients.
  • Maintains knowledge of current pre & post-operative care in the ICU and Telemetry environment.
  • Pulls chest tubes, a-lines, IV’s, Swan Ganz catheters as determined by CV team, or independently.
  • Writes orders for medications and treatments as necessary to facilitate post-operative care.
  • Dictates discharge summaries in a timely manner to facilitate discharge.
  • Performs delegated medical tasks as necessary (i.e. chest tube placement) in emergency situations.
  • See patients as needed in the outpatient setting
  • Provides education to and is a resource for the inpatient and surgical services staff.
  • Explains procedures to nursing staff to assist in care planning
  • Provides patients/families with explanations of treatments to assist in decision making / informed consent process.
  • Obtains informed consent as needed.
  • Establishes and Maintains effective, collaborative working relationships with other members of the health care team across the organization.
  • Routinely discusses and collaborates with physicians and other members of the health care team regarding the patients’ plan of care.
  • Responds to requests for consultation in a timely and effective manner in order to provide for patient care needs.
  • Demonstrates understanding of collaborative relationships by appropriately identifying and directing patient care within the scope of practice for a Physicians Assistant.
  • Deals with conflict, or confrontation in a professional manner.
  • Communicates information regarding patient care in a timely and effective manner.
  • Functions as liaison between patient/family and other health care team members and the physician.
  • Verbal and written communication is complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Initiates and/or participates in team conferences, family meetings, etc.

  • Improves/expands clinical expertise through reading, attending in-services, conferences, etc.
  • Completes annual required education.
  • Participates in local/national professional organizations.
  • Keeps current in clinical and educational practice issues both regionally and nationally through networking, reading and dialogue.
  • Maintains own professional competency, certification and visibility.
