About The Position

The Physician Assistant is supervised by the House Surgeon and works in the patient care unit with the House Surgeon and other in-house staff (Interns, Residents and Students). This role involves direct patient care, including obtaining histories, performing physical examinations, writing progress notes and orders, requesting diagnostic tests, performing procedures, and assisting in surgical procedures. The Physician Assistant also participates in CME programs, prepares discharge summaries, and may be involved in consultations and evaluations in inpatient care units and the Emergency Room.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Health Sciences, required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Computer knowledge to effectively utilize electronic medical records.
  • Licensed and currently registered as a Physician Assistant in New York State.

Nice To Haves

  • Orthopedic experience preferred.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification, preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains detailed history and perform physical examination on surgical and assigned patients in various settings including Pre-Surgical Testing Unit, Operating Room Suite, and all Patient Care Units.
  • Writes progress notes on patients' charts detailing patient status, treatment, and plan of care.
  • Writes appropriate orders on patients' charts, including pre and post-operative orders, which must be countersigned by House Surgeon or Attending Physician.
  • Requests laboratory work-ups, x-rays, etc., and ensures completion through follow-up.
  • Performs daily rounds and dressing changes if applicable.
  • Starts IV's and draws blood as required.
  • Inserts naso-gastric tube and Foley catheter as required.
  • Checks pre-operative work-up prior to scheduled surgery.
  • Takes consents for Interventional/Operative procedures.
  • Ensures pertinent x-rays are available in the operating room.
  • Assists in all surgical procedures.
  • Participates in appropriate CME programs.
  • Prepares discharge summaries and instructions.
  • May be part of the team responsible for consultations and evaluating patients on In-Patient Care Units and in the Emergency Room.
  • Attends clinic sessions when assigned and as required.
  • May be called upon to assist in other areas of Surgery when necessary.
  • The physician assistant is not responsible for answering consultations on the in-patient care unit and in the emergency department, although he/she may be part of the team evaluating the patient.
